So my speedo has never been working as long as I've had the car. I disconected it from the powerglide, and just hooked it up the cable to a drill and it bounces so its all good there. My question is how long should that nipple that slides into the tranny, mine seems to be about 1/2 inch long. I have seen others on other cars that are about 1 1/2 inch long. Could this be my problem that the cable isn't getting deep enough into the tranny to spin??? I really know nothing of the workings of the trany when it comes to the speedo. Any Ideas???

Steve. My 66 inner cable slides into the housing from the top. There is a fixed tab on the inner cable that prevents it from sliding in too far. The lower end should then at least protrude some 1 inch, measured from the bottom of the cap it is passing.
With a small screwdriver you can "feel" how deep you should stick in into the tranny's driver gear to be sure the cable will be driven. The outer side of the gear is a bit tapered and will not drive the cable.
Could the inner cable be upside down ? The later (70's) inner cables are different from the early ones (60's). Top top end has a different tab and length. When a later inner cable is put into an early housing perhaps the lower end will be too short?
Hope this helps.

Rob,
I will give this a try and look. I never thought to look in there with a small screw driver.
Thanks for the idea.
