Werid question
my oil pressure keeps droping below 20 at red lights i have added 4 quarts but it stays the same. while driving its stays at 60 but a runs horrible at redlights when its at 20 since this problem has occured its been having a problem starting like its getting no gas just keeps turning over but after a few atempts it starts
Could this have to with the same thing?? Could it be an oil pump

20 # of oil pressure at idle is not low,but if you are concerned you can use a heavier wieght of oil say from 10w30 go to 10w40 this will help your oil pressure.Make sure you do not over fill the oil,to much oil will get by the rings and end up end the chambers and foul plugs and cause engine performance to go down.If at idle your engine is idling rough this is caused by something else not oil pressure. graemlins/waving.gif

tried that here is more info
all started the other day car was fine oil was at 30 with smooth idle at stops and 60 cruising
then oil has droped to 17-20 range at stops and 40-50 range cruisng plus at stops it run real rough but idle RPM seem the same as before at about 900
I stopped added oil when i tried to turn it on just kept turnin over but nutin that has happened 2 times so far
adding oil dosnet work
when i first start the car everything seems to be ok 5 mins into driving problems occur
car seems to be smoking a lil extra but not possitve if its new or just something that has been goin on that i never noticed
motor is carborated 350
ANYONE HELP??

Check to make sure oil level is at the full mark.To much oil, will put oil level at bottom of crank causing it to beat oil into foam, which would cause low oil pressure. If oil pressure stays low you would have to go with a heavier wieght oil,to compensate for bearing clearances, when engines cold oil pressure will always be higher. As for the engine idling rough I would check for a dead cylinder, pull plug wire off each cylinder while engine is running see if the RPMS drop any, could be a fouled plug or bad spark plug wire.If thats ok check the carb make sure choke's opening up all the way when the engine warms up if the choke sticks this would cause engine to idle rough and cause smoking out of exhaust.
If you keep adding oil past the Full mark, like people said, it will end up on your plugs, and cause cruddy running. what is your idle RPM? If it's too low, you may see low pressure and rough running. Shoot for 600-800 RPM in gear.

Do you smell raw fuel in your oil?

first things first,,if your crankcase is full adding more oil will not fix the problem...you say that it all started the same time that your engine started to run rough,,does your oil smell like gas? perhaps you are putting too much fuel to the engine..there are a couple of ways to do this...either your carb is running rich or maybe your fuel pump is leaking internaly(if it is mounted on the block)if you run an external pump this wont cause the trouble...20 lbs at idle isnt so bad...if it idled faster and smoother the pressure would be higher
