Here are a couple of links for aftermarket radios made to fit in the stock dash:

I have a Custom Autosound USA-6 radio in the dash in my '69 and the 10-disc CD changer in the trunk. The changer works great, and plays even home-burned CDs, but the USA-6 radio has given my lots of trouble. The speakers cut off and on, the radio turns off mysteriously, and sound volume varies. I cannot recommend Custom Autosound products.

Does anyone know if my Custom Autosound changer will work with other brand radios?

I took out an aftermarket radio and having Wards (link below) freshen up an orginal AM radio. Going to use it and like noted above, I will add something small in the glove box. Wards will also add a IPOD or MP3 input on the AM radio if you want.

I did not get the radio back yet, but based on other input from TC, Wards does good work.

If you have a stock radio this is an excellent choice. www.turnswitch.com (http://www.turnswitch.com) They do radio restoration and conversion to all digital with your stock radio. Just had mine done and a great sound and quality.

I went on e-bay and found a vintage(new and unused in box)am-fm-8 track (Kraco)for my 68' chevelle ss. It features ajustable vol.and tuning posts and knobs and various faceplates to fit dashes without cutting anything. It's smaller in size than the stock one making it a little easier to install.works GREAT.(Kept my original AM for resale purposes)

Check the one for a 69 from Ausley's Chevelles. Looks very similar but about $300 bucks less. You can check with Roger at Ausley's he told me at Chevell-a-bration last year he was in the works for one correct for a 70.

just mounted a small 300 watt amp in the trunk and ran a wire under the carpet up to the console and plug a mp3 player into it. kept the stock am radio in the dash. jim

Mike,I have my original AM/FM Delco radio in my '66.I got it from the guy I bought the car from, and ,at the time,it was not working.Sent the radio out to Elliotts Radio in Parkersford,Pa. and Bob Elliott took care of it.It has frt. and rear 10 OHM speakers with the fader control. Those parts were purchased from Hinshaws. It's pretty cool, and the set-up "really takes me back".There was a CustomAutoSound in the Chevelle, and honestly,it was a piece of junk.I'll be setting up more pictures soon, that will include some interior shots. What I'm getting at is,if you want the "original" radio, find one, working or not, they can be fixed, repaired, and serviced. The cost was reasonable, but the coolness is just way out there....Bob

dude find a dead replacement... put in an rf controlled reciever in the trunk... pick your poison and use any controller you want... you get the best of modern tech... you can run it with an ipod or zune... and your in business...millions of songs even xm/sirius at your fingertips...and no cuts with a classic real original look

I agree, I too can not recommend custom audiosound radios although I have a few. For instance I have one in my '59 Chevy Apache, but they don't make any other am/fm radios that would fit in the dash. The custom audiosound radio in the truck sounds like garbage, cuts in and out too much and the volume is not consistent. Certainly not worth what I paid for it. If I had to do it again, I would find a place to hide a modern radio, like under the seat or in the glovebox.

Does anyone have PERSONAL experience with, AND, a GOOD recommendation for having a stock radio (such as an AM or AM-FM) modified into a more modern and upgraded sound system, to include provision for CDs???
If so, what, where?
I have two 70-72 style AM radios that I'd like to get converted/modified. Currently, I have a stock 72 AM-FM stereo in the 70 (actually, this was the ORIGINAL radio from my BB-4sp 72 wagon).

I have the same stock am/fm with the fade control and its great. The reception is fantastic. I wish the reception on my am/fm in my 65 vette was half as good.

I agree,,,try and find a original am/fm, even if broken. Don't do any stereo conversions on an original radio. It will kill the value.

I got a factory '69 AM-FM radio for mine. When I bought the car it had a junk aftermarket AM-FM Cassette. Paid $300.00 for it. I didn't mind the price because I wanted a factory radio.

The radio looks and sounds good, but it's only on when my wife is in the car. I'd rather listen to the engine.
