I have one 291 and one 840 head that are both unported. Any idea what these are worth?? I'll get the date codes if that changes things.

Ok. The date on the 291 head is f 6 9 and on the 840 it is e 6 9. I was told these were off an all original motor.

I don't doubt that they came off of the same engine from the factory. It's hard to sell a mismatched set of heads. I had a set like that a couple years ago and sold them seperately on Ebay. They had a little porting done so that hurt the value a little. The 291 sold for about $275 and the 840 about $400. They way the economy is now your 291 would probably bring around $400 and the 840 around $500. Maybe a little more if someone needed a single head with those dates.

John - I had a similar situation. I've had a mis-matched pair of rectangle port heads sittting on a shelf in my shop for over 20 years. I finally starting building the motor that I wanted to use them on this past year. I started talking to my Chevelle buddies (I'm lucky that there are quite a few of us here in central Iowa) and managed to find of us that could work out a swap so everyone ended up with what they needed. I now have a pair of 291's on my motor. Here's a link to the thread discussing the deal.

I can guarantee with dates like that they are an original matched set. I have had at least 4-5 sets of 840-291 sets that have come off original L78 engines that were untouched. Towards the end of 1969 production since it was a late year model run, they started using both casting numbers on engines. I have 2 sets as of right now.

Good luck
