Well, I took the stainless strip that runs along the bottom of the windshield and this is what I got....
Anyone got any tips on how to replace this upper cowl area?:(

yikes! either got to cut and patch what you can or find a donor car to get that panel out of. Another oprion is a repro cowl

its pricey and i dont think you need the whole thing tho.

you can find a cowl section off a donor car or use one of these.

this is for a 70 but if you go to dynacorn here
http://www.dynacorn.com/site/04home/home.html
they have one for a 68-69 also.you just need to find a dealer that sells it.
i think there is some one that just sells the channel that you can cut and weld in.good luck

I'm working on a 70. Sorry about that. I need to change my screen name. I know there are aftermarket cowl panels available. I was wondering how difficult is this to do?

I don't know if it will help you but it might give you some ideas. Here is how I fixed mine.
It's a Pontiac but still a A-Body.

I say use the repro piece. I just put one in and it fit great. I did install the cowl shoulders at the same time. It might be tough to do with out replacing at least one of the cowl shoulders. I would bet that they also have some serious rust, based on your picture.

AJW,
Do they repro the shoulders as well? I haven't seen them. Where did you get yours?
Dynacorn repros all of those pieces plus three versions of the firewall. I replaced everything from door post to door post and everything fit as well as you would hope.
