I'm trying to help my grandson get the A/C going on his 87 Celica
I added enough refrigerant to bring the pressures up but it seems that the A/C Amplifier is not sending a signal to the magnatic clutch relay

Does anyone know where this thing is located on the car?

Dean, I no longer work as an auto tech. (still certified). I have never had to replace one of those!?!? anyhow That unit is either housed inside a black plastic housing near the Heater box or inside the heater/AC box itself. I am going to the library today. If you would like e-mail me and i will look it up in the component locator guide.

Dean,
Have you tried going down to the dealer and asking ? I have found that most Toyota dealers are very helpful, they should be able to get a picture from the parts book that shows the location.

good idea Bill, maybe I'll get a chance to stop by the dealer
I haven't talked to my grandson since (he's working a regular job and going to college too) so I don't know if he located it yet or not
When he brings the car back over we'll look around the heater box

Dean,
I don't know for sure where it is on an 87 Celica, but up until 84 it was behind the glove box. I worked at a Toyota dealer in the Mojave and we would take these things out and turn the adjustment knob all the way up so the AC would keep the compressor engaged. It was the only way to get the inside of the car cool enough for our customers to stop complaining.
If the thing is broken or the adjustment is to far down, the compressor will not turn on.
Good Luck to you.

Well he finally came back over yesterday and we found the printed circuit board thingy on the front of the heater box
It had no knob or adjustments on it but did have a burned up little capacitor looking thingy
But now it was doing something different, not only did I still have no ground to the relay operating coil but now I also had no hot wire to the relay or to the 10 amp fuse behind the passenger's side kick panel
 as I was, I said " to heck with it", I ran a fused hot wire to the relay and put a toggle switch on the dash to send a ground to the relay coil, evacuated the system and recharged with R-134
Now the A/C works with or without the "added toggle switch"
I have no idea what all I bypassed with the toggle switch I guess if it blows the compressor or condenser because of high head, I'll find out but I told him not to use the toggle switch if he don't have to
maybe I should tell all my friends and realitives I only work on American built cars (except Fords) smile.gif
