: Inner Tie Rod, zerk clearance issue, 65 Chevelle
65Malibu2Run Jan 26th, 09, 3:06 AM I just replaced the tie rods on my 65 chevelle and found an issue with the inner tie-rods. The originals on the car had the zerk fitting on the end/side of the tie rod. This works fine. But, the new ones had it in a different location...backside of the joint. Well this poses a problem. If I use the straight zerk fitting that came with it, it will just barely clear the frame, but I don't see any way to be able to grease it after everything's installed. It points directly at the frame and is very close to it throughout the steering range. If I use a 90 degree zerk pointed down to the ground, the zerk will hit the frame when you steer. This is because the 90 degree zerk is longer and sticks further out. There really is just not enough room to have a zerk on the backside of the inner tie rod joint.
Question is, what have you done about this? Is there a particular brand inner tie rod that keeps the zerk fitting on the end/side like the factory? I'd like to know which brand so I can buy it as I know that will work fine. The replacement one I bought was part number: ES681N, but it was not moog. It was some other aftermarket brand.
Thanks in advance for your help.

I had this same problem, and used the 90 degree fitting. the fitting was just as long as the straight fitting, but I could get on it with the grease gun. Maybe try a different supplier of fittings and see ifyou can get a smaller one???
sbvelleman Jan 26th, 09, 11:05 AM Click on the link, it will show you a right angle grease gun adapter. It's made to address the problem you are describing. The link is for the picture, you can probably get it locally.
It's made by Thexton (pt. #418) http://www.sjdiscounttools.com/the418.html
shadowgray396 Jan 26th, 09, 12:30 PM Had the same problem with my 70. Went back to my vendor and he found the correct inner tie rods through Moog and order them in. I believe you can get them through Napa also. On the ones I got it look like the took the grease fitting off the back, put a plug into it and moved it to the side.

That is good information. Ray, do you have the right part number? Thanks Glenn
ehjorten Jan 26th, 09, 7:13 PM The original tie-rods on my '69 had a 90° fitting. When I replaced them many years ago the replacements also came with a 90° fitting, but the fitting was much taller than the originals. The originals had a different size thread and wouldn't fit. I should have kept them, but I was young and just made it work. I actually replaced the 90s with straight fittings and then just greased them by turning the wheel and going through the a-arm.
For me...the original '69 zerk fittings on the inner tie-rods were shorter in height than the ones you can fit now at the parts store.

Spicer Professional P/N 4011106 from rockauto.com. Same as your '65, I think.

Glenn, I'll check tomorrow, the only number I see on the package is CB784 which has been repackaged by the vendor.
