just acquired 64 elky. once towed home therre was no spark. added new points & coil. car will not start by key (got dash lights-gen oil) jumped the solenoid with key on-started-ran for 1 hr. next day tried to start(once again key ign.-no luck) tried jumpin solen. cranked but no ignition or spark. noticed that when i turned key on fuel gauge pegged past full. anyone help here-thanx-gary

Gary if it is an auto trans car the no start could be due to the nuetral safety switch being bad or unplugged. The ign switch provides 12 volts to the solenoid thru the S terminal( the one closest to the block). Make sure the purple wire is attached at this point. If you are not getting voltage at that point trace the wire back to the safety switch checking to see where the circuit is open.
The fuel gauge pegging is an indication of the circuit being open either from the sending unit to the guage or the sending unit to ground.

The 64 has a poor dash ground scheme which also could make the fuel gage read full. However, that's not keeping the car from starting. Tried jumping coil (+) back to the battery while cranking? If it doesn't start then perhaps the points or timing is off.
