I had local gent build a 97 Vortec Engine for me. Experiencing some time setting issues.
Is the factory balancer for the Vortec same as prior 350 AND is an older style (metal) timing cover the same as the Vortec or is the timing guide for the older style a different location. Runs fine if timing is set by ear but with light can't get anywhere close the timing indicator with the mark on the (supposedly factor balancer). I'm not real experinced with this stuff but trying to learn.

Best thing to do is bring it up to Top Dead Center and check your timing tab. Pull #1 plug out and get the piston up top even if you have to put a wire or something in the spark plug hole to verify you have Top Dead Center.

i used the stock vortec balancer. but yes its an internal balance 350 balancer, and uses an external balance 1pc rear seal flexplate/flywheel.

i bought a cheap 2pc cover off ebay. its stamped sheetmetal. i think it was for a 2pc block, but ihave been using it fine, just using the old style timing tab location (mounted at 2 o'clock).

Thanks for the replies gents. Had a machinist buddy locate TDC and "Relocate" the timing mark on the Vortec balancer to spot on the older "2:00" and incorrect timing tab on cover. Now I can retard to spray!

If anyone else runs into this, GM Perf offers the plastic cover # 12562818 which should have a blocked sensor hole, it uses RTV to seal. For short water pumps you can still use the stamped steel ones. I use the plastic one on my 99 block.
