: question about the horn.....
davoaz Jan 24th, 09, 10:16 PM I reconnected my horn today and it sounds kinda sick.
Question is, if it's sounding whimpy, would it be the horn or the relay? I figure it's the horn but wanted to make sure before I spent the time and money replacing it. Oh, and both the horn and relay appear to be original.
One would think it would be the horn. The relay is either latched ( completing circuit) or unlatched. So if the horn is working at all I would say the relay is good. Don"t know if you are trying to stay with the original or not but if you are send it to Gary at the Hornworks. He does a great job.

X3  On Gary. You may want to check power connections and ground(s) first.
Andy69 Jan 25th, 09, 10:03 AM not getting enough voltage? bad ground?
davoaz Jan 25th, 09, 10:43 AM I'm pretty sure the ground is good. But I'll connect another temp one just to be sure.
So how do you find Gary from hornworks? I went to hornworks.com and its for French horns the instruments?
BTW, are there supposed to be two horns? I only have one.
JWagner Jan 25th, 09, 10:55 AM If you have the basic single horn, it will sound wimpy. The dual horns sound "proper" to me.

He is a TC member. http://www.classiccarhorns.com/
Robinls5 Jan 25th, 09, 10:02 PM The " HORN WORKS " is the answer. My org. 70 horns sounded like a sick duck, When they came back from Gary they were and still are"" FANTASTIC ""

figbash Jan 26th, 09, 12:52 AM Take the horn off and touch the contacts directly to the battery posts. If it sounds good there, then you have some bad connections in the wiring. Otherwise, replace the horn

ToocoolZ28 Jan 26th, 09, 1:40 AM One of mine didnt work at all, the other sounded like a sick duck. After turning the little screw on them while tapping them with a small hammer while holding down the horn button they now sound like new. It took a little while (about an hour) but they have been good as new for 5 years.

davoaz Jan 26th, 09, 11:08 AM I'm sure Gary does good work, but it's alittle more than I want to spend right now being this is the 8th week I've been unemployed.
I did the direct contact test and it sounded whimpy then. Plus it was sparking when I held the connection.
So should I have two horns and one is missing? It's a 71'
JWagner Jan 26th, 09, 5:37 PM A single horn is the base condition. Two horns was an option.

Yup, with dual horns, one horn was a low tone and the other was a high tone.

Open the horn and clean the contacts with some sandpaper. It'll sound good as new, and won't cost a dime.
I believe two horns were standard on the SS and optional otherwise.

Dean Jan 27th, 09, 8:56 AM There are millions of good horns in the salvage yards.

In that case take it apart and try to fix it yourself. What do you have to lose?. There are kits available on Ebay etc. but don't waste your money on them. Might be zip products or something similar to that. If you do a search I'm sure you'll find it. I talked to Gary a few years ago when I had mine done. I also talked to another guy I found near Baltimore that had done horns for years and was in retirement. They both told me the same thing and that is there are parts needed to rebuild original horns that just are no longer available. I know Gary mentioned he had to get 100,000 or so machined for him because they werent available. There may also be plastic repos available or could always use a non Chevelle repo. just depends on what you want.
