: truck steering
primernovaben Jan 22nd, 09, 1:47 PM ok so the 67 tow rig got taken out the other night to grap the engine hoist from dave. bottom line is the steering is ridiculous there is so much slop its silly. what can i do to fix it? tie rod ends, ball joints, steering box or i heard about tightening an allen head screw on the steering box to remove slop but i also heard it was bad to do that. any thoughts?
Brettd85 Jan 22nd, 09, 2:07 PM Jack it up and rock the tires back and forth, where is it moving. I bet the idler arm is jogging back and forth. Wherever you see the slop is where you wanna fix it. You can try tightening the allen wrench on top, just dont overdo it.
RAMBO Jan 22nd, 09, 2:29 PM is that a 67 with the hydraulic ram steering, or a regular steering box?
Brettd85 Jan 22nd, 09, 2:32 PM Would probably cost you about $200 to rebuild the whole thing, may be worth it. But I would investigate whats bad first, probably all of it! :D
webfoot Jan 22nd, 09, 2:34 PM The steering in my 71 sounds similar - it was almost hard to keep it on the road in 4wd. This needs to be addressed soon. Let me know what you find out.

I've got a 1966 Suburban - they cover the earlier ones as well.

primernovaben Jan 22nd, 09, 11:23 PM ok jacked it up and all the steering seemed to move together so im not too worried about it may try to turn that allen head in a bit to tighten it up???
other than that gonna do brakes tomorrow, would have done them today or at least checked em but there is a stupid lock lug nut that you need the special socket for... i dont have the socket... retarted
cobaltchev67 Jan 22nd, 09, 11:31 PM If it's a Gorilla type locking lug nut(locking on the outisde, not the inside flower type), you can pound a 7/8" socket on it and turn it with a ratchet:yes:....had to do it a couple of times, once when helping a guy with a flat on the side of the freeway.

Hey leave Ben alone, that's correct spelling in Canada. :D
texasgilbert Jan 23rd, 09, 12:50 AM I think it's easier to see something wrong when the truck is still on the ground. With a load on it. Have someone move the wheel back and forth while you look at everything underneath. Also check the rag joint. Those get sloppy especially in an older vehicle.
66 Buick Special Jan 23rd, 09, 2:46 AM check the rag joint. Those get sloppy
yes....yes they do.:yes::p
primernovaben Jan 23rd, 09, 11:56 AM well if anything it looked like the steering shaft had play in it and nothing underneath looked like it had slop. ill replace the rag joint for sure today. as far as the lug nut goes it is a stupid flower one and i hate it
webfoot Jan 23rd, 09, 12:20 PM Can you get a new rag joint from any old parts store? I'm sure that's what mine needs too.
FRYNTYR Jan 23rd, 09, 1:37 PM ill smoke the joint for sure today. as far as the lug nut goes, when I'm high it looks like a stupid flower and i hate it
Ha-ha!, He said "Joint"
texasgilbert Jan 23rd, 09, 2:06 PM Sometimes you can get them in the HELP section.
