Hi guys.
I’m getting ready to coat the trunk of my 72 Malibu. I've read a lot about using Zolatone instead of spatter paint. It looks like the closest match to original is 20-72 Silver Grey. Hard to tell on the web site but the color looks close. http://www.zolatoneaim.com/z20_1.html Let me know what you think.

If the 72 is the same as the 70 it doesn't look right to me. Should have a black base and light, almost white, blue spatter. Someone will chime in, you could also do a seach for Zolatone in this forum and body shop. Zolatone has been discussed before. I used the GM spatter paint then added a coat of Krylon clear satin finish to make it waterproof. It turned out good and has held up for over 3 years now and I do use my trunk. Whatever you use it's a good idea to spray the trunk with black primer first.

Thanks Hank. I was going to use the rattle can spatter paint until I read some posts about Zolatone. It got some pretty good reviews. I didn't see any posts pertaining to the 72 though.

Al, I used spatter from the Parts Place on my 72. It looks very close to the original and does not need topcoating.

Part number PT6800Z (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/TRUNK-AQUA-BLACK-SPATTER-PAINT-PRO-QUALITY-QUART_W0QQitemZ270297568500QQihZ017QQcategoryZ1007 6QQssPageNameZWD1VQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1 638Q2em118Q2el1247)

Yes it has gotten good reviews. Main complaint with the GM spatter paint is it's water soluble. The clear coat fixed that for me. I'm not saying the Zolatone is not a better option. Just offering you another option.

This is the same stuff I used on my 72. Looks good, but it takes a spraygun with a large tip to spray it.

Is black aqua the correct color? If I remember correctly on my last 72, the spatter paint looked like a light grey, could have been a light green. Hell, I'm color blind anyway.

I just got off the phone with the people at Zolatone. They don't have a "Black Aqua" They do have a Black with white specs number 20-71 Onyx Black http://www.zolatoneaim.com/z20_1.html Not exactly original but neither is my car ;)

Shane, that's the popular choice if you use Zolatone.

Well we got the Zolatone sprayed in the trunk today. I went with the Silver Grey 20-72. http://www.zolatoneaim.com/z20_1.html
2 reasons why.
1) My last 72 Malibu from what I remember had a grey spatter paint in the trunk.
2) I also have some documentation that calls for grey flec .

I'm very happy with the results, I wish it was a little darker but oh well. Grey Stone 20-64 was my
2nd choice

Take a look scroll to the bottom of the page.
