I recently purchased a 1969 SS396 or so I was told it 's an SS. Where on the engine should the Vin number be located? I looked at the flat surface machined pad on the front passenger side of the block just below the head behind the alternator but there's no numbers on the it just paint. I removed the paint and still cant see anything. Could there possibly be another spot to look? Better yet would anyone have a picture of what I'm looking for from another engine?
Thanks

John, you can check in the rough area above the oil filter location.

Strange there are no numbers on that front pad. The engine code suffix should always be there and the partial VIN is there or the location mentioned above. Sounds like the block might have been decked at some time.

If the engine was rebuilt and the block was decked, It could have been removed. If its stamped above the filter, You will be OK. If not, You may be out of luck and may have to look for a build sheet. Look under the back and front seats up in the springs. Also check behind the door panels...

I don't know about Chevelles John, but my Norwood built 69 RS/SS 350 Camaro had the VIN above the oil filter.

The reason some plants moved the stamping to that area in 1969 was because of the alternator now being on the passenger's side and it had to be moved to make the stamp on the front block pad. The engine suffix code was already stamped on the pad before all the accessories were put on the engine.

Research on Chevelle engines with partial VINs indicate all small blocks were on the engine pad (along with the engine plant ID info) and only Kc & Atlanta stamped the pad by the oil filter on big blocks, all others were on the front pad.

My 69 still retains it's original 307 and the partial VIN is on the pad along with the suffix code
