I am replacing my original mono AM radio in my car with a new digital AM/FM radio. I have read a number of the forums here, and I have decided to go this route:

6 inch round Boston Acoustic SL65 front component speakers in the kick panels
New kick panels with molded places for speakers (lost my vent knobs! darn)
New AM/FM radio $$$ (yeah, that 575 dollar job)
6 x 9 Boston Acoustic SL95 speakers for the rear boot well

radio is here, 6 inch rounds are here, 6 x 9 on the way, panels on the way

I havent decided to cut my new top well to surface mount the rear speakers yet. I want to hear what it sounds like first.

Should have it installed in the next two weeks and i'll let the forum know how it came out.

you got it. I have been doing research on this stereo for a fair amount of time. I , like many folks, love the sound of my 350 running through 2.5 inch series 40 flowmasters.....but after 30 minutes or so, or at the cruise in, i need some tunes. Probably the biggest issue is painting the kick panels...the rest wont take but one nice NC day to handle. Only wiring to a wiring type of guy.

well ok here goes. Put in the rear speakers and mounted them into the convertible well. By the way, there is a cutout for a 6 X 9 speaker, but that is for a 1971 6 x 9, not a 2009 6 x 9. I had to get out the grinder and grind out a bunch of material to get the BA SL95 set to fit. They sound fine. The component front speakers on the other hand were a pain and sounded like crap. And the crossovers are so big that I couldn't fit them anywhere. So I replaced them with Boston Acoustic SL60 fronts that have the tweeter and woofer in one speaker with built in crossovers. Much Fewer wires, fewer connections, simpler installation. Sounds very nice. Must use 1/2 inch spacer (included with speakers) in order to clear the backside of the kick panel speakers. The radio is 45 watts perchannel, and it is loud I guess, but i was expecting more oooompfff. It will just have to do for a while. going up in volume will cost a fair amount of money in pre-amp and speakers.

Do you have any pics. I am still planning my set up. Like to see what you have there. Also, Did you insulate behind the kick panels?
