install "SS" springs. Sounds like your hinges were stiff, and now that you've loosened them up, you either have standard Malibu or tired hood springs.

Well you never know about the hinges until you get that spring off. ALL HINGES NEED OIL IN THE RIVET POINTS! No If's and's or but's! Could be the rivets in the hinge are the problem, not the spring. If you have a domed hood or cowl induction hood and have used 26 coil springs on the hinge, sure try the new 29 coil SS spring, that's what it should have. But if a hinge is in good shape, when you add a little oil, it should stay up! If people would have regularly lubricated their hinges with oil, at least once a year, I would not be in business.

Agree on all points and a worn out hinge will let the hood fall, especially if you lube it up good. Lack of lubrication may have been what was holding it up before.

Brings back memories. I had a 68 RS Camaro and put some teflon lube on the hinges. That hood would BARELY stay up if you opened it up and held it for a second as far as it would open. If you didn't do that, or of someone tapped it or the wind was blowing....it would slam down like a bomb had dropped from the sky!

This was when it was only 15 years old or so with less than a 100K on the clock so I don't think the rivets were worn.

I just wonder if that is all it took, just that little lube and WHAM. :)
