: Headers Glowing Red

Anybody have any idea why the headers would be glowing red? Possibly spark plugs that are too hot? We were running 145's and went up to 147's.
Other than that, we have no idea? Has this happened to anyone else? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Marie

what is your timing like? sounds like it may be reatarded a bit too much. Ever see that motor on the cover of Chevy High Performance last month?

Timing, really?! Would not have thought of that, at least not yet. Will have to check that out. We have had timing and carb issues we are trying to overcome. The timing had been quite high and we have been working on bringing it down. Earlier today it was around 20, but we have messed with things again and have not been able to to check the timing--one reason being the GLOW--so we shut it off. Just getting too late w/o waking the neighborhood. Thanks for the idea, will check tomorrow.

Glowing headers is always timing or lack of carbeuration. As Nick said, retarded timing, and when it comes to carbeuration, if its too lean they'll glow. Since you hadn't had problems before it is most likely the timing. Did you screw with the distributer? take it out and put it back in? It might be a tooth retarded if you did.

Yes, we did have the distributor out, and we are fooling with the carb too. The carb is hissing and spitting somewhat--actually popping and pshhhh with the occasional flame. Is that an indication of it being lean or what? Or is that timing related too? It is like we are chasing our tails on this one, 'cause one thing seems to lead to another problem! Thanks for the reply.

listen to these guys. it sounds like most of the problem is in the timing. once you've got that straight, you'll probably find the carb. is not as off as you think. i see alot of guys ask for advice, then throw 2 or 3 other things in the mix. start with the basic timing (i agree, i think your are a tooth off, from personal recent expierence)then work your way to other things. good luck.

Thanks. Yes, we are going to start with timing. You are right about adding too much to the mix. We usually work one thing at a time so you know if you made a change you can go back to ONE thing instead of twenty. We are fairly new to this and had not seen or heard of what might be the problem with headers glowing like that. Thanks for the help everyone!

Carb spitting is highly possible timing related. Sounds like you're heading in the right direction starting with getting the timing dialed in. smile.gif If you need anymore help feel free to post again!
