: HEI module
laguna74 May 14th, 03, 11:46 AM These might be stupid questions but I am hoping someone can help. I'm trying to pinpoint bad misses. Will someone explain what the module does and could one fry in roughly 10 minutes if die electric grease was'nt used?
Steve S May 14th, 03, 12:46 PM The module converts low voltage, low current pulses from the pickup coil to higher voltage, higher current pulses that drive the coil. I wouldn't think that 10 minutes without the grease would cause the module to fail. If it is bad it was not due to the missing grease. Take it to your local auto parts store and have them test it. I had one unit that would be fine when cold but as soon as the engine warm up would start to intermittently misfire. Before I could get home and replace it, it backfired and blew the muffler apart.
laguna74 May 14th, 03, 1:40 PM Thanks,I'm going to have it tested today.I was also wondering if the each pin on the module directs current to certain plugs,it's the same 3 cylinders missing all the time, 5,6 and 8.Sorry i forgot to mention that.
Steve Johnson May 14th, 03, 3:23 PM Autozone has testers, just make sure they have a working machine and know what they are doing. Also ask them to run the test several times in a row so the module gets good and hot. Lastly if it fails ask them to test the unit they are going to sell you to make sure that it is good.

I would first check your plug wires and distributor cap. IMO, I can't see the module cause only a particular one or two cylinders to miss. What condition are your spark plugs in?
RobertD May 15th, 03, 3:25 AM Just for thought, but have you done a vaccum and compression check? Vac is the most important with that many cyl. miss firing.
laguna74 May 15th, 03, 1:04 PM I replaced the plugs cap wires and rotor with new stuff and the vacum and compression checked out ok.The guy that rebuilt my carb mentioned i had an ignition problem from the black soot in the carb and on the bottom of air cleaner lid. One other thing that is a mystery to me is,it will run perfect when it decides to then quit again. If it was vacum or compression related could the problem come and go? I still have'nt had the module tested I got too busy.Hopefully I'll have it done by the weekend,I'm going to check vacum again too. Thanks for all the help.
Tino May 15th, 03, 7:01 PM If it runs ok for a while then acts up, then the module may have a thermal problem. If you have a spare around, try that to see if the problem goes away. Otherwise, I'd try the pickup coil.
laguna74 May 17th, 03, 3:58 PM Here's the deal, the module checked out alright.Still no go so I tried running a direct 12v from the battery with the same results.I swapped out the new plugs for more new ones(r45ts delcos),I did'nt know what else to try.Anyway it's running perfect so far.I'm a happy camper an I'm gonna go drink ma coldies know.
thanks again.
