Last night i started hearing a knock from the front driverside of my engine. I think it may have something to do with the steering (maybe power steering?) but when i turn the wheel slightly one way the knock stops. But when i let off the gas and coast straight ahead the know is very loud. What do you guys think? Thanks in advance.

*EDIT* also i have noticed a small leak which i beleieve to be power steering fluid. I filled it today because i was pretty low on fluid.

First of all with the motor off (i had to say this to C.M.A.)grab onto your fan/water pump pully and wiggle it back and forth to see if there is play in the pump shaft, pullys, and check to see if belts, pwr steering pump and alt are tight.

If pump shaft wiggles then your water pump is bad,but If all checks out then get a length of wood like a 1/3 or better yet a push broom handle cut flat on both ends. Now, with the motor running have someone turn your steering wheel while varying engine speed and at the same time carefully (avoiding rotating fan, belts, pullys, etc )place the wood onto the pwr steering pump body and then place your ear on the end of the stick to see if the same type noise/knock is transfered from the wood to your ear.

If not then try holding the wood on your water pump body, timing cover, fuel pump, valve covers, etc while varying engine speed until you can hopefully identifiy where the noise is coming from.

If the noise does not change with engine speed then it may not be an engine or engine accessory related problem and you will need to look elsewhere like front suspension, etc.

Let us know how you make out.

Well the sound only occurs while i am driving. I can rev my engine and hold it at like 1,500 rpm and nothing makes a sound. Also when i turn the wheel while stationary nothing happens. My power steering pump is leaking and has been for awhile. So i am thinking that must be it. Where is the best place to buy a new one.(remanufactured)

Maybe your bearings are shot in the pwr steering pump making noise when you put a load on it as the wheel is turned.

Some auto parts stores handle them, chevelle parts dist like O.P.G.,N.P.D.YEAR1 which also offers some rbld services too, etc.

If you want to keep your original pump you can check in Hemmings motor news and there are rbldr's listed that will rbld your unit, there are also at time used working units listed for sale.

You could also place a wanted add in team chevelle to find one.

Pop off your power steering belt and see if it goes away.

Could it be the timing chain loosened up and is hitting the timing cover?

Check your harmonic balancer. I had one fracture in the keyway and come loose making a knocking sound at idle/ low rpms. Sounded like the main bearings were shot.

Check the three bolts that hold the lower pulley to the balancer

Had a friend come over and ask me to listen to see if I thought there was a rod knocking on his 66 Impala and it turned out to be a loose crankshaft pulley
