: What gears to run?

I have a stock ramjet 502 running on 295/65 bfg radial ta tires and it currently has 4.11 gears, Which is a little too much gear for that engine. Would a 3.73 be a significant change, or is something else in order, I am not looking to have a car built for efficiency here, but i think that the 4.11s are actually hurting its performance. Anyone have any input?

IMHO and experience,a 3.55 gear would be perfect

The tire you are using is approx. 30" tall. The 3.73 should be pretty well bang on.

Instead of changing the gears in the rear, have you considered an Overdrive Transmission?

Just my personal opinion, but 3.42 is about as low as I go for street use (unless you have overdrive) and I understand that the RamJet is a very torquey powerplant. Don't know why you would use 3.73's on the street with that type of engine. Heck, you might even be fine with 3.08's.

got to agree with that jawjuh boy...I run 3.42 in my 396 equipped 67 ss. these replaced the original 3.55 that was in it from the factory. my "problem" is I only run 235 60-r15's (25" tall) all around. this combination is due for an overdrive tranny soon as it is just too much for the street/highway.....

I think the 3.73's would be the best compromise between performance & street driving.

Don't forget those 295/65 tires are 30" in diameter, that's a pretty tall tire. Running those tires and a 3.73 gear would be the equivalent to running a 28" tall tire and 3.42 or 3.55 gears.

thanks a lot for the input!
If I had the money, I would for sure look into the gear vendors unit, but thats simply too expensive for now. I think I will eventually end up with the 3.73 gears. FYI, I do plan on switching to an MT ET street in the future, I just dont know the size yet, so I am not sure what effect that will have on the height quite yet. Thanks Again!
