Is there any corrosion right now on the piece you're talking about? If not, you should leave it plated and powder coat it as-is. It does not have to be bare metal to be powder coated, and the plating will afford you more protection underneath the powder. If there is rust, it will need to be sanded or sandblasted. Bear in mind that chrome is a heavy metal and you do not want to inhale that dust. Here in NJ the EPA has us under strict regulations so I would get fined for improperly disposing of sanding dust containing heavy metals such as chrome, lead, zinc, etc.
I have a powder coating line at work and have shot clear powder over some chrome parts in order to protect the finish. It works just fine. If you can, I'd leave it as-is and shoot it.

Same. No rust, have a powder coater shoot it as is. Chromed parts worked great for me.
