im having a very bad no start problem that i have been trouble shooting for weeks. evry time I go to start the car it turns over but doesent fire. I will get a pop here and there and sometimes white smoke out the carb I varified the timing about two times changed the plugs and wires still no start. but I did hook up the timeing light to see if it was putting out spark and the light flashed about 3 time then quit for about 5 seconds. I the put it on the coil wire to checke it out and the coil made the light flash but the light doesent flash stedaly it kind of flashes 5 times then misses then flashes again also the coil is leaking some oil. and it gets real hot with the ket to the on position
ps this is all after a head change from a blown head gasket

It kinda sounds like the distributor is 180 degrees out of time. Did you time the distributor to number 1 cylinder on its compression stroke? I know you said you verified the timing, but this is the most common mistake.

I made shure I had the correct timeing by bringing the engine up to tdc after the #1 intake valve closed. I put the distributo in with the rotor point to 12 o clock towards the carb then made shure that the rotor was on the number one post with a timing gun. is there any outer way to check for tdc?

Make a mark on the distributor just below the cap in line with the number 1 plug wire tower. Bring the crank around to TDC for number 1 cylinder just after the intake closes. Pull the cap and verify the position of the rotor. If the rotor is in the vicinity of the number 1 tower, then try advancing the timing by rotating the distributor counter-clockwise and see if it will try to start. This sounds like a simple case of timing. You may have to play with the distributor position a little to get it to run.
