Any mechanics that work on the new LS equipped cars can help?
My wife's 90K mile 2003 Suburban started leaking coolant. I thought it was a water pump since it was a fairly large leak. I wasn't aware there was a week hole (so I never checked it to make sure). Was at Pomona swap this Saturaday and bought a 2006 water pump with 20K miles on it for 50 dollars. Went to autozone and bought 2 gasket sets for the water pump and silicone.
This morning I put in the 20K mile pump, while the fan/shroud were out I sprayed the engine compartment with Simple Green, and pressure washed it. (Looks new!) Interestingly, the 06 pump has no weep hole and no access panel in the back with bolts, but the 03 pump does. Both spin the same and have no play or irregular movement.
So, I was surprised, because the pump I took off seemed OK.
So I drove the car to my friends place ( a mechanics shop) to show him what I did today. And now there's still a little leak!:(
I chased the leak down to the hose (#2 below) from the heater core to the overflow tank. There are 3 hoses going into the right side of the water pump there-
1. the lower radiator hose (very thick) towards the front and
2. a medium sized hose in the center (to the overflow tank / heater core)
3. a thinner hose from the heater core towards the back.
Problem is the connections to the hoses #2 and #3 above are something I've never seen before. No simple hose clamps, this is a black plastic band that appears to be crimped on and look non-serviceable so the whole hose assembly needs to be replaced.
Can a dremmel tool cut off the black plastic band there so the hose can come out and be replaced? Why the hell did they design it so we can't work on them?
