Its a not really a big problem but happens
every third or forth time i go to start it up.
when you turn the key to start it makes a click..
sound. it will do it twice or three times before
if just starts up fine..

it's a 71 chevelle with a stock 1986 chevy 454 and hei distributor.

ohh and every two weeks it wont start up and i
have to remove the dist cap scuff the metal
surface on the cap and rotor..then it starts up
fine.

thanks for any advice.. graemlins/thumbsup.gif

I'd say look at the main wire going from the battery to the starter or the starter solenoid. It sounds like the solenoid is engaging since that's what the click is. When the solenoid engages it closes a contact which powers the starter motor. The solenoid clicks in but the motor does not go so it could be that contact or the wire feeding it.

It is just a single click, right? If it clicks repeatidly when you turn the key it's could be in the purple start wiring circuit feeding the solenoid.

This happened to me before and it turned out to be a loose battery cable. Take all the cables off clean them thoroughly and tighten'em back up. Better to start with the easy stuff first! smile.gif

Can also be the single wire running from the positive battery terminal to the terminal block on the cowl support...had that problem with a 68, repaired that wire(originally this was a fusible link) and no more problems. Several schools of thought on whether to use a wire here or a fusible link. Link is correct, wire works and has been used on all 6 of my chevelles.

If it repeatedly clicks then it's likely a poor connection.

Check both ends of the main power wires. Check out the crimps holding the terminals on and check the ends where they are bolted on. The ground can easily go bad where it attaches to the engine.

Then, check the 10 guage wire that runs from the battery to the horn relay and then from the horn relay to the firewall connector. The connection could be going bad where the fusible link is between the battery and the wire or at the horn relay.
