: Internet connection
I have a Dell studio 1735 with Vista,at times where you have the icon for you internet connection, there is a red x going through the 2 pc icon ,but I still have my connection . I have Verizon FIOS What could caused this red x THANKS
ChaosEnvy Jan 18th, 09, 3:26 PM the red x is for no network cable attached. It is either, one of rj ends, your nic card, or the modem/router you have it connected to. Either the port on it, or the power cycles one in a while. Thats my guess.
Gary S Jan 18th, 09, 4:52 PM If Vista says it has no connection, but your internet still works, there is only one possibility. Vista is screwed up.
fishhead Jan 19th, 09, 1:29 AM we already know that...:D
ktrim Jan 19th, 09, 8:44 AM does your pc possibly have a wreless connection Vista home doesn't display network info for a connection that is working only for a disconnected connection. You may be conneected via wireless instead of wired. Then yourinternet would would work while you stll see the icon for wire network with a red x showing no connection. Vista seems to default to the wireless connection, then ignore the wired if there is wireless available, im sure there is a way to change this but I have not been able to find it (my sons lapptop runs vista home- it is crap). The only way I can get his wired connection to work is to disable the wireless.

Mine does the same and it's screwed up:thumbsup: Says no cennection when I'm on the net and does a bunch of other strange stuff. It's slow as well.
monte7ocar Jan 21st, 09, 8:42 AM if you right click on the internet icon you can turn the activity animation. im not sure which vista you all have. i only have one icon that is on my taskbar. i also run my computers wireless when im home at school its hooked up to the ethernet cable. when the cable is hooked up i still have one icon but it list both the wireless network and the cable network. since you have internet but a red x in the icon run the repair option and it should fix it. from what i have seen the wireless software forgets about the connection being hooked up.
Finally Jan 21st, 09, 8:52 PM You can configure to display both the wired and wireless connection in the system tray. Right now I'm on wireless, the icon is a single PC with waves going out of it. My wired connection, 2 pc's, has a red x on it. If I connect wired, laptop is configured to disable wireless when hardwired, then the x moves to the wireless icon. Disabling the wireless when hardwired is a BIOS setting on a Dell laptop. Not sure about other PCs but you may want to check.
The Dell is wireless with FIOS internet, only it does it every so often,I hit the Icon to repair, but tells me no problem. I did order the wireless "N" ,instead of "G"
