: shill bidding at b-j
gmman4 Jan 18th, 09, 12:58 PM from what i understand, shill bidding is legal in arizona. while it may be legal, i think it is unethical. i may be an old guy living in the past, but i am curious as to other members thoughts on shill bidding. i think b-j should go to "reserves" on cars. wouldn't this for the most part eliminate the practive of shill bidding?
Mike Jan 18th, 09, 1:04 PM Thought I saw Reggie Jackson bidding on his own ZL-1 last night but could be wrong.

I think non-reserve auctions eliminate more shill bidding then reserve. If there's a reserve, the auction company knows this, and can have people planted to raise the bid, or just do it during all the comotion. In a non reserve someone has to buy the car, so if someone shills the bid, and they're the highest bidder, it's theirs.
IMO, non reserve auctions are the most "legit" auctions.
704EVER Jan 18th, 09, 1:07 PM I think even the Reserve auctions have shill bidders, they get it close to the number the buyer is looking for, then just back off and see what happens. It's just a part of auction life if you ask me.
MarkM Jan 18th, 09, 1:07 PM Thought I saw Reggie Jackson bidding on his own ZL-1 last night but could be wrong.
They said he was the previous owner.
depley Jan 18th, 09, 1:09 PM I was watching an Christie's car auction on tv the other day when the announcer explained how the auctioneer was "taking bids" that were not there. He was just raising the price knowing what the reserve was trying to get the car to that point. I mean no one was even bidding and he was raising the bids!!!!!
gmman4 Jan 18th, 09, 1:10 PM this is why i brought up the topic- seeing reggie jackson bid on his own car.
66 MYSTERY CHEVELLE Jan 18th, 09, 1:12 PM I think people spend wayy to much time worrying about BJ
Jeff74 Jan 18th, 09, 1:14 PM Read this they said he was the previous owner.
Chicken Coupe Jan 18th, 09, 1:18 PM So it's like professional wrestling? :clonk:
gmman4 Jan 18th, 09, 1:22 PM it just takes some of the fun out of watching the auction when you know these practices are going on.
dirtrocker Jan 18th, 09, 1:24 PM Since its doubt I'll ever have the coin to enter a circus of a place like that, I'm not overly concerned :D
rubadub Jan 18th, 09, 2:24 PM Lets face it, were on this car forum, this is our hobby. No different then golfing, or being a sports fan.
If we were golf fans we would be watching the tournaments and keeping up on whats what.
Barrett jackson is a part of our hobby, shill bidding, reserve or no reserve, it doesn't matter, some of the muscle cars we really like are changing hands and going to different parts of the country.
You take Russo&Steele and mecums, we don't get the television coverage like BJ does. Did we learn anything on this years auction, sure we did, we know the prices on some or a lot of them are down 30 to 50% of what they were two or three years ago.
If you have a muscle car or thinking about buying one, keeping an eye on these auctions is a good thing.
I can't buy these high end cars, or, for the most part the medium end cars, but this is my hobby and I know I'm going to keep up with it.
Is Craig jackson a crook, who cares, he has a show, the cars I really like, you bet i'm going to watch it, I may be setting on the bench in this ball game, but its my game.
Look at the pictures Bruce put on for us, that took a pretty good effort on his part, and we enjoyed them, if it wasn't for the auction we wouldn't have been able to see those pictures, enjoy it for what it is.
Any of you that are reading this, your in the game just like me, or you wouldn't be on this forum, keep up with it, pay attention to it.
Were actually pretty lucky we get to see these cars, we just got several evenings of getting the opportunity to get a look at cars we may never see in real life, if you come right down to it, thats kind of special.
To repeat here is Craig a crook, I don't know, but I do know for a fact, the man put the cars right out there for everyone to see.
He's making a ton of money off the cars we love, pretty hard to digest that sometimes, but I don't look at it any different then the guy that owns the grocery store, when you buy that loaf of bread do you care if he makes a lot of money, it doesn't really matter. Enjoy the show.

Never go there again...
grandsport Jan 18th, 09, 2:39 PM I attend car auctions 3 times a week as part of my business. Shill bidding is a regular occurence. I try to be as alert as possible but as fast paced as the auctions are its hard sometimes to know if your competition is the wall or not. Just a fact of life in the auction arena.
1968MotionL88 Jan 18th, 09, 2:58 PM AZ is sometimes different, thats for sure.I remember when I was living out there in 2004 the Municiple Court Judges were called "Justice Of Peace". You don't need a Law degree just live in the district,be over 18 and Speak English. The Superior Court Judges do have Law degrees and were trying to change this back then.I lot of Good Buddy Law in the lower Municple courts, soooo I understand how shill bidding could be legal in that state. When thing I like is they have Sheriff Joe!

X2! I'm with you.. Way to many people sitting around looking for something wrong or something to complain about.. If you have the love of cars in your blood, Barrett Jackson only makes your blood flow faster, if not you need to find another hobby. :)
rbwjr325 Jan 18th, 09, 4:21 PM Thats like saying who cares about Pete Rose,I just LOOVVEE baseball.
I'll damn sure worry about B-J if and when I want to. For me B-J on Speed is just the ticket for the deepest depths of Winter here in the Midwest. I enjoy the hell out of it. I don't like Craig Jackson and some of his cronies and the fees are ridiculous. Also some of the bidding practices appear questionable at times but it sure is entertaining. We criticize the announcers but IMO none of us could do any better and I doubt a better team could easily be assembled. I just thank God that Alan Decadenay isn't on there any more.

Bingo...we have a winner!:beers:
Plus Rob...I think people are getting 'cabin fever' due to the cold, long winter months:D
Seems that this happens every year at this time.
Look at it another way...if the auctions weren't running...what else would everyone be talking about?;)

jackoxc Jan 19th, 09, 1:54 PM my 2 cents? it's just like e-bay. set your price that you would pay at most, and stick to it. if you get outbid--so be it. as a retired cop, i've seen many many seized vehicles at auction bring in much more than they are worth because everyone gets exited and they just gotta have that car.
ss1970chev454 Jan 19th, 09, 3:10 PM So it's like professional wrestling? :clonk:
what...professional wrestling isn't real.
tricketson Jan 19th, 09, 4:51 PM Reggie was a prior owner of the car. He was on stage trying to help the seller out to build interest in the car. At about $90,000 he reportedly looked at Craig Jackson and said "hell if it's going that cheap I want to bid". Craig said that was fine but he had to go down to the stage. He did and bid a couple of times but was not the winning bidder. If I recall, Reggie sold it for well over $100,000 a couple of years ago.
I'm not saying shill bidding does not take place but I doubt Reggie would be involved.

Bunz-T Jan 19th, 09, 5:03 PM Several things I noticed.
What proof is shown that there is actually anyone bidding online. The guy looking at the screen could just as easily be looking at a reserve and bumping it along.
So many times I would see the bidding progressing, several ring men shouting, and only one bidder shown.
It makes great theater and so many times the cars take a back seat to everything else. It allows a lot of people the opportunity to pay a lot of money just to get noticed. Those that buy during the commercials miss that as everything continues on. It should be viewed much like buying a car sight unseen.......Buyer Beware.

I was standing right next to Reggie-He was in fact bidding on the car. He was warned twice that the hammer was up and gotta go and when the hammer droped he was pissed, I think he really wanted the car back and he was gripeing for several minutes after, Just my thoughts.
Andy69 Jan 19th, 09, 9:03 PM shill bidding is a part of the auction scene, unfortunately. It's a questionable practice, but some auctioneers allow it.
bookmaker19 Jan 19th, 09, 9:06 PM And of course "SHILL BIDDING" occurs. I was in a skybox Friday & Saturday with a guy and his son who had 40 cars crossing the block, they pumped some of them up to show more intrest and kick start the bids but never bought any of them back.:noway:
Dave Birdwell Jan 19th, 09, 10:37 PM With B-J, you can bid on your own car to raise the bid, kind of like a fictitious reserve. You bid and hope someone else outbids you. If you are the high bidder, you owe B-J the commission fee to keep your car.
Car auctions are really not the place to buy a car. Very rarely do I see a good deal go through at the big Kruse auction here in the fall.
My theory on B-J, they find cars like the family selling the 1st 55 Thunderbird the other night. BJ deals with the family on what the price is they would like to get for the car. Say for arguments sake on the 55, that the family would be happy with $300,000. So BJ pays the family the $$$, probably has someone who wants the car for $400,000. BJ tells the family here is what is going to happen. YOu're all going to be on TV when we sell the car, and the car is going to sell for a big number, like $600,000. We need to put on a show for the TV audience, so this is how it will all come down. I wonder if I am far off.... :noway:
I wonder if B-J ever guarantees a seller a minimum price for one of the "high interest" cars. For sellers buying their own car back, they would have to pay 10% buyers fee plus 8% sellers fee. 18% is a steep penalty to pay for not meeting your personal reserve. Add on the $500 bidders registration fee and other expenses and you throw away a lot of money to see your car cross the block.
Jeff74 Jan 20th, 09, 2:56 PM Jackson said 57% went to new owners$$$$
d1_bradley Jan 20th, 09, 4:02 PM Wow, 43% "no sale" (or buy back if you will) is BIG. I bet the car corral outside was packed!
depley Jan 20th, 09, 5:53 PM I think he also said Vegas only had 53% go to new owners.
oktunes Jan 20th, 09, 6:38 PM I would think BJ could waive all fees after the sale if they wanted to. If they get some high notoriety cars listed, they can advertise them in advance. Example the Reggie Copo Camaro. If the owner, I thought it was Reg, buys the car back because it is under some pre-arranged price between him and jackson, BJ would waive fees. I would think they could do this easy enough. It's all BS and there is nothing good for buyers or sellers. It's just good to see a nice variety of cars on TV int he wintertime!
704EVER Jan 20th, 09, 6:49 PM Jackson said 57% went to new owners$$$$
I'm surprised they would even let this information out! I always thought they wanted everyone to believe, every car was sold to a "New" owner!
Pete 67 Jan 20th, 09, 7:49 PM Jackson said 57% went to new owners$$$$
Where did you get this info?
depley Jan 20th, 09, 8:03 PM Where did you get this info?
There was an interview with jackson on tv where he made that statement. I guess it was on a wrap up of the Barrett-Jackson auction on Speed. I know I saw the interview and he said exactly what was stated.
Where did you get this info?
i could be wrong but i thought he said they went to new bidders
e_normus Jan 20th, 09, 9:49 PM i took it as 57% were new buyers, people that had not bought cars there before
