: oil pressure ok in neutral / drops under a load

Went to the rod run in Pigeon Forge, TN a few weeks back. On the way home I noticed the oil pressure gage needle had a tremor to it. After a few more miles, it really sharted shaking! Anything over 3k rpm and it would drop to around 20. Let off the gas and as the motor dropped to around 2500rpm it would come back up to around 45 and hold. I made it home, no noises and the engine runs fine except for the gage telling me something's wrong. I let it sit for a week and fired it up yesterday. It held 50+ psi cold, went around the block and the same thing happened once it warmed up. With the clutch in, I can hold 4,5 or 6k rpm with good oil pressure???? Under acceleration, it drops to 15-20psi, let off and it comes back up. Steady driving below 3k and the oil pressure hold 45psi, wind it up and it drops. Is this a bad main brg? In neutral with no load, it seems to hold pressure - what in the world is going on with this 350?

see if the pickup broke off.drain your oil pan and smack the bottom with a rubber mallet,if its laying in the pan you should hear it bounce.good luck

is this a eletric gauge or a mechanical one?

Did you verify your oil level??

Mechanical gage.

Oil level is full - added and extra 1/4 qt just to be safe.

I finally figured out what it is. I stopped the car on an uphill and held it there. Rev'd the motor, held the rpm steady and watched the oil pressure start dropping.

Next, turned around and backed up the hill with the nose down. Rev'd the motor like before and everything was rock steady.

Sounds like the pickup tube has rotated towards the front. In the next week I'll lift the front of then engine up and pull the pan and check the pump. Anyone ever had this happen before?
