Hey everyone. I recently bought a '68 El Camino SS with a LS-6 installed. There are just a few little things I am wanting to fix on it. It needs a new blower motor, speedometer cable and a few other things that I have already found for it, but one thing I cannot locate is the proper speedometer gear for running a 4.10 rear with a THM-400. I assume that this is a factory combination, but have come up unlucky so far in locating one. I think my SS came with 3.08s or something, cuz the speedometer reads like 20 MPH off. Can anyone help me out? I love the combination with the low gears and high-revving big block, but it would be nice to actually know how fast I'm going when I get my first ticket.

Welcome to Team Chevelle. Nice to see another Nebraska guy here. This web site will tell you everything you need to know on the speedometer problem.

Changing the driven speedo gear is no big deal, and your local Chevy dealer can get them with no problem, but with a 4.10 rear end you're probably going to need one of the gear reducers mentioned there. The largest driven gear available is a 45 tooth and unless you're running some really tall tires that won't be enough. I'm doing this swap myself.
If you'd be interested in getting together with some other Chevelle freaks, email me. The Heartland Chevelle Club is based in Eastern Nebraska & Western Iowa. We already have one member in Norfolk, a couple in Fremont, and another in Sioux City. Hope to hear from you!

Awesome, hey thanks for the info. BTW, this may be a dumb question, but where is the blower motor on a '68? Mine is not working and I need to replace it but damned if I can't find the thing. On the wife's '98 Lumina you have to go under the dash and it's a real PITA. Thanks for your help.

Oh, by the way, my '68 originally came with the 396 and A/C, if that makes any difference in the location of the blower motor.

The blower motor is kinda hidden on the passenger side between the fender and the inner fenderwell.
Some people have said that they can get it out without removing the pass fender; I am not one of those people (perhaps I just lack the skill).

Should be able to get to it by dropping the inner fender well.
