: Harmonic Balancer wobbles a little

Hey there guys - small little problem that I think could become major if I don't take care of it pronto - but I wanted to check with you all first!

Anyhow - I dropped a 350 in my Elky that I bought locally. The guy was mumbling something about the harmonic balancer, but I wasn't really paying attention to him because he was talking my ear off.

I notice though at low rpm's the balancer does not rotate smoothly. It sort of has a wobble to it that goes away at higher rpm's, I'd say, above 1000. The wobble seems to be up/down instead of front/back, if that makes any sense.

Is this cause to replace the whole balancer? Or should I be looking at something else, like just pulling it, and then re-tightening the balancer correctly? Could I possibly have the wrong balancer on there? I heard that although a balancer for a 400 would fit on a 350 crank, they are different balancers, and would cause a wobble like I have. Is there an easy way to tell whether I have a 350 balancer or a 400 balancer on there?

Thanks again guys for all your help.

I would pull it off and get a new one. Measure the end of the crank to see if it bad. I have seen them come off and it takes alot of misc parts with it on the way out.

Thr outer ring on a 350 is the same size all the
way around, a 400 has a recess in it part of the
way around. If you want a pic of both of them I
could send you one.

Double check and make sure it's not the crank pulley that is wobbling. Stamped steel pulleys are notorious wobblers. wobble wobble.

Make sure if/when you pull it that the druff key is OK and that the cranks keyway is not beat up from it wobbling. I had an 8" Z-28 MALL balancer crack on me last summer that I thankfully caught before I damaged my crank!!!
