oi, where to begin. ok:

for starters, i've got a 72 chevelle. as we 72ers know we've got that goofy little GEN light that comes on when we start the car and goes off after a second or two.

well the other day it started comeing back on but only part way, it just barely comes on, hard to see unless its dark out. at the same time any part of my sterio thats hooked up to an amp shuts off and turns on sporadicly.

today i noticed that my battery was bubbleing over and makeing little noises. i freaked and took it to the kregan store and told them. they tested it, said it looked ok except that its over charged. they said posibly because my alternator was overcharging it.

haveing already figured my altinator was busted i'd bought one the other day and decided to install it right there in the parkinglot just to be sure i didn't explode the battery on the way home. but the car is still haveing the same symptoms.

i dont' know anything about wireing and i'm so scared now i'm gonna 'detonate' my battery or fry my entire wireing system. any thoughts?? anyone have this problem before?

on a posibly related note. a few weeks earlyer i was stoped at a red light when my tack spiked to 8k rpm then the car died and wouldn't start. i fiddled around with the battery for a second and it started right up. no idea what caused that either, though it hasn't happend again.

anyhelp would be super appreciated, and if anyone is in the Sunnyvale/San Jose area i'd be glad to show off my problem to anyone who'd be willing to stop by.

Most important question:
Is the car safe to drive?

You said you changed your alternator, but did you replace your regulator...Its behind the driver side headlight. If you haven't replaced it, this is probably your problem.

I'm guessing your other alternator was OK and the problem has been your regulator all along. If I'm not mistaken, the regulator controls how much the battery is charged.

Suggest going down to AutoZone and picking up a Wells VR715 solid state regulator for around $11.00. Disconnect the battery before installing it. Probably need to move the charcoal canister out of the way to get at the regulator.
