: 5 or 6 speed to handle 700 hp?
Mstehle Jan 16th, 09, 6:14 AM Well I think I may have made a mistake on selecting my transmission. I went with a 2004R from the real Art Carr so my wife could drive the car too. Kind of stoopid on my part because she can drive straight drive.
No problems with the tranny, it works just awesome. The problem is that my car doesn't like running the auto tranny and loads up around town. The engine is a 540 pushing 700 hp with 655 tq and likes to run at higher revs.
All recommendations are to either re-cam the motor or go to a manual trans. I would rather not re-cam and sacrifice power. The tremec info I have seen says only good to 600 hp. What 5 or 6 speed manual trans. will hold 700 hp with no problem and what should I expect the cost to be? What about converting to a manual? What problems shold I expect to encounter? I would like to keep the console in the car as well.
Thanks
pdq67 Jan 17th, 09, 1:43 AM You've got a miss-matched DD setup is all. BUT I bet the sucker hauls the mail when the go pedal hits the floor!!
What's 1st gear like? If it is too high compared to being matched to your rearend gear set and overall rear tire dia., it can load up.
Maybe just a low-speed carb tuneup may do you??

jakeshoe Jan 17th, 09, 2:34 AM If you are loading up with an auto, you either don't have enough converter or the tune is off.
A manual isn't going to fix it, a radical cam and a manual trans sucks to drive in town at low speeds.

Yep. If anything, the automatic is helping your issues. A dominator sucks with a big stick and manual. I use a 750DP 4150 and it is like night and day.
Changing over will get you all kinds of opinions but I still say at the end of the day it is hard to beat the Nash 4+1. Even with your power unless you start clamping down at the track repetitively it will hold up.
pdq67 Jan 17th, 09, 11:27 AM I'm assuming the Nash 4+1 turned into the Richmond-5, so is the Richmond-5 that stout??
I ask b/c I want to continue to "row-my-own" after my 496 break's my M-20 is all.
Jake just hit on kinda what I was talking about. Can you barrow and old 3310-2 or maybe an 800/830 and then switch out your carb to see if it helps??
And if it does, keep both and DD the little one and then put the big one on when you want to really beat on her..

Mstehle Jan 17th, 09, 6:27 PM Gear ratios of the 200-4R are: 2.74 first, 1.57 second, 1.00 third, .67 fourth.
The stall is 2800 recommended by Art Carr. When I talked to him about loading up he is one of the people who recommended re-camming the engine.
Carb is AED 850, which is a Holley core. I have leaned her out some and that helps with loading up.
Yep she hauls the mail pretty good . Not that I have done this or anything but "theoretically" when you go to set shift points at WOT and you are only shifting at 4700 she gets to 120 in 10 seconds flat. The engine does not even start making "real" power until around 5200 and she is good to 7000 all day.
pdq67 Jan 17th, 09, 7:26 PM I figured as much!!
Wheeeeeee!!

Mstehle Jan 18th, 09, 1:18 PM I forgot to add rear end is 3.73 and rear tire size is 315/35/17 which yields around a 25.68 tire diameter. I am tinking maybe a change to 4.11 or 4.56 will help around town and still not suffer too much on the highway with the OD? The car is strictly street driven. I think I would get thrown off a track as she has no cage and I am pretty certain she will run faster than a track would allow with no cage.
Please keep the advice coming. I will also call or PM Keisler to get their opinion.
Thanks

I never had a big power mill like that, so can't say if a gear swap will help or not, but if it did, I would suggest that changing to 4.10s will only make a couple hundred RPM difference so going to less than 4.33s may not be worth while. 4.56s would get you around 2400RPM @ 60mph assuming converter is locked up, not too bad actually. It will make first gear steep, 25mph would be at least 4000RPM.

The Tremec TKO 600 will handle your power all day long with street use and the occasional track run. The 600 hp rating is for constant input. The ratios are just a bit lower on 1-3 gears than your 200R4 at 2.87, 1.89 and 1.28 but I cant say it would be enough to keep your engine from loading up.
Your best bet would probably be to lower your rear axle ratio.
Mstehle Jan 19th, 09, 7:55 PM Thanks Jeff. I appreciate the honest answer.
I was thinking the same thing. I will do some more research on gear ratios and rpms. I am thinking at least 4.10 maybe even 4.56. Man won't she be a beast with 4.56's? :D
