graemlins/sad.gif I have a 1971 402 that uses a qt of oil in 300 miles.Stock engine with a 30 over bore and a Mild (rv) cam.It has been rebuilt and rechecked by 2 machine shops and they can not find problem.
The intake has been replaced and machine matched to the heads to make sure oil is not getting sucked in the bottom valley.
It will smoke oil just like a valve seal problem.
It has had a set of iron rings the first rebuild and now a set of moly rings on the second rebuilld.
Also with the second rebuild, I have breathers on both valve covers to cancel any other possibility of oil getting sucked in the motor from the PCV.
Help!!!

I have a 454 that is doing very much the same thing. It has been through twice. The first time Hastings claimed it had glass media imbedded in the rings. But the machine shop in Mattoon, IL said it came from the intake, which had never been media blasted. So I paid another $600 to have it put back together and it still smoked and uses a quart every 200 miles. It has Keith Black's with moly rings. Pulled the heads they put new guides and positive seals in. When it was apart after 2000 miles it looked like the cylinders were new with no scuff marks or wear pattern.

Put the heads back on still used oil and smoked. The machine shop said let us look at it. They said it was running rich but the rings were sealed and no more than 5% leak down, so the rings are fine they say.

I swapped intakes and carbs 3 times and no difference. They claimed to warranty their work but they never fixed the oild comsumption. It was honed and checked each time but made no difference.

I'm about to do a rebuild on it my self and forget the machine shop and if I mess it up it is my fault not any one elses since you can't depend on any one any more.

Whittaker...
Talked to AERA today and they said our problems could be ring wash down causing a glaze on the walls and oil to get sucked up past rings. The ring will not seat properly.
They suggested (and I will) send a oil sample out to confirm this.If this is the problem it makes sense as my emgine did not use oil untill 300 miles on motor and then it was gradual after that.
