I just purchased a big block for $600.

Block 3999289 K2072
(D) Head 353049 K2172
(P) Head 353049 K2472

Everythine says PASS on it and the block says HiPerf Pass

I also have a question as to the inside. It appears to be painted a light brown and there is NO sludge build up. Over all it looks clean as a whistle...I was told it was rebuilt.
What is the easiest way to tell if it was rebuilt?

Is there a way to check, without taking apart the bottom half, if it is damaged? I will take off the oil pan...

What do you think?

it has 72 date codes? 73 Model year?

Does the HI PERF in the back of the block mean anything?

What do you think the HP rating is on this setup?

Shane,great motor,you did good for $600
Mostly all of them say "hi perf" on the block. It looks pretty clean in there! I would be willing to bet its been rebuilt.

Now my next question is...

Is there a way to tell if the engine has any problems?

Is there a way to tell if I have a spun bearing? Bent rod?

If it were me Shane, I would find a machine shop with a good reputation in your area and get them to have a look at it.

That sounds like a great idea. I was just wondering if there was a way to tell if the bearings had spun or the rods were bent without taking the caps off.

No way to tell if the bearings have spun unless you take the caps off. You can do a quick rod check just by rotating each piston to TDC and if they are all about the same you should be ok, not exact science but will give you an idea anyway. The brown inside could be whats left over from Blown head gasket. You did ok for $600.

Did you get the complete engine for $600, or just the long block?
