I started to say "Return of reserve prices next year" but Craig Jackson is such a whore he'd rather sale CLUNKER JUNKERS for $5 a piece than he would go back to No Sales, so I had to go with "Wont break lastyears record". (BUT then I think he suddenly added another extra 100 or so cars this year at the last minute. Probably just to pad the final #s for braggin rights! )

Great buy on a Saturn ahile ago, it went for $3500. There are so many guys with money trying to impress the people watching that there should still be some crazy prices. They won't think anything of paying $60 thou for a car worth $45 out in the market place.

Take away the GM Heritage Cars tonight and the market so far is WAAAAAAAAAAAY down on the offerings!!!

GM saved the opening days reciepts so far. There's actually been some DEALS go across the blocks tonight!!!

I remember that ZR-2 454 tested back in the day. DAMN I liked that car, but I would NOT have paid $65k for it... :noway:

YOu can see how GM mis-managed their business, by seeing all these cars from the Heritage collection that are pretty much just an excuse for one of the departments to build something for fun! Some are prototypes, but a lot look like engineers just playing around. Why would GM waste money buying restored 4 doors? With the money they had, why not buy converts and hardtops!

d1_bradley
Jan 14th, 09, 3:31 PM
Most of what they're passing off as "Heritage Collection" is a bunch of test mules. Put a new braking system, transmission, motor, etc. in a car and beat it to death on the road. Doesn't draw any attention and gets real world data. That's the reason for trucks, 4 doors, etc. After they've done their duty they can't sell them so they just parked them. Then there were the 'toys' built to keep people busy when they weren't testing.

I think it's getting harder to watch each year. Airhead announcers flapping their jaws while someone is trying to discribe car on the block. Bearly see the car go off the block and they go to commercial while a couple more cars go thru, then go to some guy out wandering thru the tent showing us cars that will go Friday or Saturday. Seems the prices might be down alittle, but maybe they're more realistic? Still most owners aren't going to get the money spent getting the cars into the condition they're in. I noticed they really pushed the fact that the GM cars will be very difficult to register. They kept saying the cars come with salvage title?

I watched 3 nice street rods last night go for cheap money, 30s and low 40s. Those same cars a couple of years ago would have brought twice that. I wonder if some cars aren't bid on by the owners to protect their investment, rather than lose big money on a low bid?

That's the dirty little secret. How many owners are buying their own cars back for 18% of the block price rather than take a beating. That's what you'll never know, they like everyone to think they are all being sold. I've also seen some cars "Sell" for 1/2 or less than it would cost to restore them. If some of them are "Really" selling, there can't be a lot of happy sellers in the early days of the auction..:noway:

I just can not envision paying the prices these cars seem to fetch, even in these down times, plus the buyers premium. The last few years I figured I could build many of the cars shown for lots less than the prices. This year it seems to be down to where some I have seen were for less than a top resto.

One big block Vette in particular seemed to be way less that I expected.

All bets are off, I am currently watching a VW bus selling for $55,000. And the announcer says he things it would be fun to drive.

i've been watching it pretty closely the last few nights, and i tell you what, if your not pissed off over the $500 to get in the tent, or the excessive fees, i see a lot of people getting very frustrated over the amount of time they are spending with each ride this year.

you bid your $ and then the guy spends 10+ minutes brow beating others into bidding. almost an e-bay situation, wait till the end of the bidding only to get sniped. if you look close you can see some really frustrated people in the audiance. i think they are spending 2-3 times more on each car than they spent last year.

and i've seen a lot of 100k customs go for a fraction of the build price....

They are working hard to get bids up and pretty much telling the bidders how stupid they are for not bidding up the car. Still have had quite a few cars stall out in the 20 thou range. The first car I saw during commercail on the new was an Austin healey.
these were the darlings last year, some doing near or over $100k. This nice car they ran tonight stopped at 30k. They stopped the auction twice to explain to the bidders that his was too cheap. didn't matter, it didn't get any more action.
I think I am seeing more cars go across the block on the internet then I am on the tv show.
Here's what I saw during commercials
Healy - 66 Chev 427 - Ford truck built for Sema, they said it cost over 300k bid to 39 and they couldn't beg a penny more - 87 Buick Grand National 6700 miles 32k - 73 Z28 28k - red 66 SS396 38k - 61 chev 409 4 spd 30k - 69 Camaro yellow 396 4 spd 42k - 63 Chev 409 4 spd red no price - 37 Plymouth convert 60k - 38 buick street Rod 40 - blue 70 Chevelle 396 numbers match 40. All these cars went thru during commercials.

I AGREE, I heard them earlier this week say a bidders registration fee this year is $500!!!   I was like, "WHAT?" Wasn't it $100 in the past? You don't have to pay $500 to get in the tent. The $500 is for a bidders pass which gets you into the front seating section and free drinks and, of course, you are then approved to bid on the cars. You can still get in the main tent to watch the action with a general admission ticket which is $43. Russo is $50 and RM is $100.

these two cars just went through.

1970 shelby gt500 $100,000.

1969 z28 cross ram matching numbers 200 mile off frame resto 4sp $85,000.

================================================== ====

Looking at the 2007 auction on basically the same two cars.

shelbys were 175,000 181,000 181,000.

1969 z28 176,000.

I told him the prices were down from 30% to 50% from two years ago, or anyway in this case it looks like it.

Anyway, for its worth.

I think the quality alone has dropped on the "NO RESERVE" auctions at BJ and this may be reflected in the prices. If you look at the cars at Russo and Steele, they are hands down the cream of the crop cars for auction at this time, so it's hard to compare. Everything looks pretty on TV, but I suspect the higher end cars aren't on TV but on the block with a reserve at R&S.

Thanks for answering my question Scott...I'm new to Chevelles and presently learning as much as I can about them before I buy one. I think a true LS6 maybe out of my price range but a nice 1970 LS5 or 396 might be the ticket. No argument Rob. I've been hearing from a lot of guys down here and from friends I have around the country that they're all done bringing their high end stuff to the "NO RESERVE" auction. They're tired of the high buy back prices and with the state of the economy, it makes more financial sense to go with Mecum or R&S. At least if their 150K car stalls at 100K, they don't have to pay 18K plus to bring it home from a reserve auction. I think things have swung in a different direction on the high end, no issue cars. Take a good look at Mecums' upcoming auction in Fl. and R&Ss' consignments in AZ, these are cars that you would have seen 2 years ago at BJ!

That was correct. Reggies COPO 427 Camaro stalled at $280. Jackson pimped on it all he could and it would do anymore, so finally Reggie bid on it himself and ran it up to $300 then let it go. According to Jackson, every car there is worth about twice what it is bid. Seems to me like what it is bid is what it should really be worth!

When a year ao mecum sold these Zl-1 for 400-800K I can imagine the shock of only getting $280K would upset more than one person.

This auction aside from the GM cars and the "specialty" cars like the #1 t-bird and the "charity" cars has shown the market to have undergone a major correction which was long over due.

If not for Ron Pratt and Hendricks would they have sold anything for big bucks? Seems like those 2 accounted for several of the big dollar purchases.

I look at the collector car market over the past few years as being driven by the same greed that put the banking industry, Housing and the rest in the tank. It is a market that has been and continues to be controlled by a small group of people who seem to be selling their cars to one another and a bunch of them through the Barrett-Jackson auctions. one guys buys this car this time, the next time he reciprocates and buy the other fellows, both of them at profit, so each keeps making money. But then the market falls and all of them are left scrambling and taking 1/2 or less of what they paid for a car the last time.

Their's a reason that a lot of the BJ cars are down , 1) is definitely the economy, but 2) is the lack of any real , non-issue cars ! Re-bodies,VIN swaps ,fake paperwork cars are everywhere and that they go across the block on Prime Time now , in my opinion is that is all BJ can attract now. Anybody that want's to get rid of a questionable car now,......take it to BJ ! They'll do it, and do it in prime time too !! Check out some other threads on the Yenko site on the ,3 Re-bodies that Jacquie provided the link for. ZL1 only real thing is the VIN and COWL tag, ...Green COPO Rebodied.... etc etc etc. Check out the thread on the "NicKey Nova " ,.....Un-Believable...... Rear Prices are down, but I wouldn't use the BJ auction as the bible on car prices. It will be interesting to see how Russo and Mechum's make out , better cars, real cars, and car Owners not "Professional Puffers and Sellers".....just my thoughts

From what I/we saw, no one got sniped. He who hesitates is lost and I watched ALL 40 hours of it.

Was it last year that the owner of the 'Ramchargers' drag car thought his car could be sold for $350,000? He felt it was "short-hammered" and was annoyed it was being rolled off the block while the bidding was still going on. After it was sold for $250,000, and pushed outside, he chained the front and rear tires together and reported the car "stolen." Now, THAT'S a douchebag!

From what I've heard, each year there is always litigation taking place in auctions such as these.
My thoughts? If you don't like the cars, the people, the bidding or anything else, simply don't watch it.
Just don't watch it only later to complain about it. :beers:
