: March Perf Serpentine + Hydroboost

I was reading on another forum about possible issues with the March serpentine setup and a hydroboost. If I remember, the person said the March PS pump did not put out enough pressure to work with both the power steering and hydroboost. I'm confused about this since it wasn't clear if they were using the pump with no resivoir or the billet March pump.

I want to order the kit, but not sure if I should get the kit with the Sagnaw PS pump or the pump with the remote resiv.

Anyone run into this issue here?

IIRC, the March power steering pump's integral reservoir doesn't have enough capacity and the system sucks air and cavitates... air in the hydroboost means a non-functional hydroboost.

Thus, run an external reservoir pump. This also easily allows you to run 2 return fittings (1 for the steering box and 1 for the hydroboost) which eliminates all chance of "crosstalk" on the return line which can lead to dragging brakes.

Cool thanks for the info. I was planning on getting a remote reservoir with the hydroboost fitting to elimatate having to use a tee as well. Guess I'll go for the kit with the non Sagniaw pump/res.

I think Troy has it about right. With a stictly power steering system you have some minimal expansion as the fluid heats up.

But with hydroboost you have the variable volume of the moving booster piston so the fluid rises and falls a lot more. The March integral reservoir bling pump did not have enough capacity to accomodate that.

Well I ordered the kit and now looks like there is a catch. If you get the Midmount A/C,
you also have to buy the compressor pulley for another $120!!!!! WTF! Nothing like spending $800 and then they make you spend another $100. These guys are crooks... hehe

I wonder if I can find this part in the local yards. Hmmm.

COMPLETELY off topic... Question about the April '08 BBQ we had at my place...

Steve, was Troy still at my house when you finally showed up?

The answer to that question would be yes if you reworded it to say "Did Steve show up before you left?" :p

I think the correct answer would be "barely" :D

And for the OB March input: one of my buddies swears that it is a better deal to just buy the complete March package that includes all of the accessories. Sorry about needing a new pulley... I run (and buy) V-belt pulleys :D :beers:

Well, for $220 I can get a brand new polished Sanden compressor with a serpentine pulley. Guess it might be good to keep the other for a spare.

Still on the fence if I should swap out the Sunbird style pump for one with a reservoir+external tank.

If they haven`t shipped the system yet make sure they send you a pump with the proper output! They famous (infamous?) for using low pressure/high volume R&P pumps in high pressure/low volume systems. You`re looking for roughly 1300-1400psi/3.5GPM. Their incorrect pumps run 900psi/6GPM and will most assuredly make the brakes and steering work and feel bizarre. An interesting issue with their billet pump is that it isnn`t vented. When used with a hydraboost pressure build won`t let the booster totall disengage after you`re released the brake (like a hydraulic ratchet mechanism) so that you slowly applies more and more brake until the car won`t move anymore. Doh. The best remote reservoir we`ve used for the hydraboost is PSC Motorsports SR-102. They have internal anti aeration baffles and a replacable C-1700hydraulic filter to boot. One last tip, when you install the system pick up a bottle of LubeGuard power steering conditioner at NAPA. It lessens the surface tension of air bubbles making them pop easier which in turn makes it much easier/faster to bleed the system. Mark SC&C

Mark, I don't see the SR-102 on their site nor a filter. Have any pictures?

I have a brand new DSE reservoir sitting in a box right now but I still have to weld a second bung on it for a divorced hydroboost return. I see PSC has twin-return tanks for hydroboost apps, and if I can get one that also has a filter built in (so I can eliminate my current Lee filter and the extra hose and 2 extra fittings) that would be awesome!

Pretty sweet setup right there. Wonder where I should hang it? Maybe up on the radiator core support where the external regulator used to be and then send the hydroboost lines around and inside the fender wells?

Thanks for that info Mark. I decided to go with the stock style pump with reservior and add a t-fitting. I was going to go with the PSC remote reservior with the smaller type II pump, but the March kit was $100 more. SOooooo, for $100 less I'm going to keep the stock Sagniaw pump w/keyway. Hopefully the stock one outputs enough pressure.

I might be calling to get a Hydratech system.....just need more $$$$.
