i asked this in my other post but didnt think id get very many responses but anyway my question is what can i use to plug my gas tank the locking cap was pried off(when my car was stolen) and ruined the filler neck so now the new cap i have wont thightly stay on so it leaks gas when i drive. i dont want to stuff rags in there the only thing i could think of was to try a thick piece of Shower curtian like material and wrap it around and use a big rubberband to keep it on any suggestions would be great thanks.

kane,
I forget what year your car is, but it probably requires a vented gas cap so you cannot just seal the pipe off with a "shower cap" etc. Stuffing it with a rag is like making a giant fire bomb.....the only safe thing to do is replace the tank, they really are not all that expensive, considering the possible consequenses

the car is a 68 chevelle but by the looks of the gas cap i dont see any vent theres a rubber type o ring on the underside of it but the tank itself has two vents coming from the back also i no the best thing to do would be replace the tank but i just did that

If you still have the old tank, remove the new one and cut off the offending filler neck from each of the tanks. Fill the new one with water and weld the old neck onto the new tank. Empty the tank and dry it out, reinstall it. No problem.

You do not need to actually cut off the filler neck to fix it. I had a similar problem on a car some years ago. I went to the junk yard and removed (much wiggling to break the solder) the fill pipe from another old GM car. The end of the fill pipe can be heated with a torch to loosen the solder and the end is easily removed while hot. Clean the tank from your car and swap the fill pipe ends. Or take the part to a shop that does tanks and let them do it if you are not comfortable with using a flame on your gas tank.

Take the tank out and take both the old tank and replacement tank to a radiator shop to get the filler neck changed.

Take it to SOMEBODY instead of messing with it w/a torch. Even If you fill it with water and wash it, the residue can still make enough fumes to blow you up. Guy I know killed his 16 yr. old son cutting an oil drum making a grille. Expierenced/trailer welder guy. I cut the neck off a rusty tank with a pipe cutter and used marine fuel hose and clamps to graft it on a good tank with a bent filler. Some cars/trucks come from the factory with 2 piece fillers joined with hose. Howard
