: TURN KEY AND NOTHING HAPPENS
70chevychevelle Feb 12th, 03, 8:19 PM When i go to start my 1970 chevelle i turn the key and nothing happens. I have to turn it atleast 15 time before it will turn over and start. I have tryed putting it in neutral and starting it and also tryed to wiggle the shifter on the colum, but does not work either. what are some things i should start to look at? could it be my key switch that is bad? any help would be appreciated
70chevychevelle Feb 12th, 03, 8:20 PM when i turn the key on the aftermarket gauges lights go on and my cd player works.

z-mans-67 Feb 12th, 03, 11:44 PM It's not a rolling chassis is it?
No seriously though, did you check your ignition switch? Check for a short and continuity.
onick Feb 12th, 03, 11:51 PM yea, i would say check your ign. switch for continuity . Maybe go check your nuetral saftey switch and make sure that it is functioning properly, just some suggestions.

70chevychevelle Feb 13th, 03, 12:05 AM how do you test that switch?
CHELKAMINO Feb 13th, 03, 12:00 PM If your gauge lights come on when you turn the key......it sounds to me like you need to check your frame to block ground. If you do not have one...try that first. I had the same thing happen to me years back after i did some painting on my frame and motor mount area. I put the motor back in only to have my gauge lights come on when i turned the key. It turned out that my motors ground was through my motor mounts. I installed a ground to block strap...problem fixed.

First of all, the LARGE negative battery cable should be grounded to the block (one the '70 through the alternator bracket...actually a poor choice, by the way) and the small pigtail from the negative terminal should be grounded to the body, usually at the right front fender. If you don't have the pigtail connected, you will experience the problem you had. My 70 never came with ground straps between the engine and body, OR ground straps between the frame and the body. That little pigtail is very important

You too Jerry? I never got any of those ground straps either. I know that Chevy salesman took them. Just can't prove it.
I think I'd start by pulling off the Neutral Safety Start switch connector off the switch. It can be removed without removing the switch. Under the dash, lower top of the column, there is a curved shaped switch mounted on the column. One connector has a purple/white and a purple wire in it. Towards the top left side. Remove that connector and measure the purple/white to ground with a meter. The key must be ON. Should have 12 volts to ground. If that looks OK, put a jumper between the purple/white and the purple. Maybe use a flattened out paperclip. Put tape over it so it doesn't accidentally touch the frame. See if the car starts without the NSS switch.
70chevychevelle Feb 13th, 03, 4:44 PM ya i got a ground strap for that goes to the fender
ed3196499 Feb 13th, 03, 6:42 PM when this happened to my car the problem was in the fuse block I went thru it with a test light and found some bad connections after I ran some new wires it fired up
