: stalling when wet

not the chevelle but my truck....

ok heres the deal.... (this is an 83 C10 w/ a carbed 305 and hei dist.)

for awhile my truck was missing and running rough. whenever it snowed or rained it would stall when the rpms fell quickly or when stopped at a light. it only stalled when it was wet out....

i just replaced the plugs, wired, cap/rotor, set ign. timing and it ran great when it was dry out. great throttle response, no missing, runs smoother than it ever has...then today it snowed and it still started up and ran fine but would stall out at a stop or when the rpms fell quickly (as in letting off the gas quickly on the highway)

any idea what would be causing this? its really starting to **** me off.

thanks.

this might be a long shot but does your truck have the coil spring choke control on the side of the carb mounted into the intake? it may be possible that the choke is working backwards closing when its hot and staying open when its cold? if this was the case I would think hard starts would be a problem too just a guess??? good luck, these guys can figure it out

Thrown a wrench on the carb bolts and mani bolts lately? Just a thought but it costs nothing. Maybe it's so lean (vac leak) that it was marginely firing before, the tune up helped hide the problem but when it's damp out the air is thicker and hence slightly harder to burn?!?.......... well, I'm diggin, :)

ill give it a try, there are alot of vaccum caps and such from all the emissions crap ive stripped off. maybe theres a small leak somewhere, ill go over it again.

any other suggestions?

Do you still have the heated air system going to the air cleaner? If not, it could be carb icing in the venturi. Does it eventually idle ok after in warms up?

progress has little to do with speed, but lots to do with direction.

Tap the EGR valve with a hammer? (Don't know why it would only be when wet but still, it's free :-D )

i was talking to my boss at work and he had the same problem i did when his heated air system quit working. i think it may be the problem. it will rarely ever stall once its warmed up real good. i no longer have that stuff on there...just an open element air cleaner and headers.

Carb icing--when temp and humidity are just right the cold air rushing thru carb will cause it to frost up just like a AC. This is why there are hot air fixtures in breathers. When you slow down the carb goes over to idle circuit where the frost has the idle ports covered. When engine dies the frost melts from engine heat hence it will start right back up Whem under hood temp reachs a certain point it stops stalling. Only way to cure this is to go back to hot air setup. Hope this helps
