If you want a "lopey idle" you will lose vacuum.

I had a schneider cam (LSP30005)in the old block that seemed to run well with the intake lift @ .0500 and exhaust @.525. Range from 2000 -6000 rpm not bad vacuum. Then my machinsit advised me that a comp cam 11-246-3 should work ok but has a intake lift of .525 and exhaust of .555. Range 1800-6000. I just dont want to bend valves.

The 396 I built had drivability as the most important consideration, especially being an A/C car. The motor got built with a cam similar to Edelbrock.s Torker. Although not popular here we could not find enough reason to swap it out.

To get the best of both worlds you may need to be looking at 112 LSA.

I do agree with 112 LSA that seems to give the best vacuum for my brakes. Antything less would hurt the vacuum and I don't want to use a cannister

Ditto on that. That cam probably runs a little smoother in dan's 454 vs. my 396 (402 ). I'm very happy with the sound quality, just waiting to test the performance quality this spring!

you won't bend any valves with either of those cams.

I think you'll be pleased.
Even in my 454 the cam sounds 'lumpy', It does NOT sound stock.

The Speed Pro CS-175R gives a rough idle in a 396 w/o being overly fussy on the street with an auto, should be no issues with a 4 speed. You will need to confirm that you have sufficient seal to retainer clearance and spring bind clearance, as well as correct spring pressures.

With a stock 325 hp block and heads, I have a Comp LS6 hydraulic grind. It's got a great idle, quick response and works good with my 4 sp 3:55 gears. Turns 6 real easy and has plenty of vacuum for my power brakes.

This cam is an old grind but I like the lope and has vacuum for power brakes.
Comp 270 Magnum (224 @.050) .510 Lift.

Easy on valve components...it's just too simple for folks to like...

I used the Voodoo 60202 in my 454. It's a great cam. I'd use it again. Muscle car idle, great low end torque and no vacuum issues with power brakes. Excellent driveability. The 60203 is just a little more aggressive.

I wish Crane made a BB version of the old SB 274H0-6 cam.

Maybe it's their 282H0-8 cam??

Look at the Isky 270 Mega cam -221-221-.542-.542 108 lsa or their 286 with 224-224-.510-.510 108 lsa for a little more power.

I had a CC268 in my stock 396 before I went off the deep end. The 268 sounded good, idled well with no surging at low RPMs, and went 13.6 at the strip. No issues with power brakes.

I'm using the 60203 in my 402, Vac is right around 15. See below for other engine items
