John,
I just measured a BB cam I have sitting on the shelf and it is just a hair over 23 inches long. This should give you some idea as to how much room you are going to need in front of the motor to do the job.

John, i have a 68 chevelle and what i did is take out the radiator. Then loosen the bracket that holds the hood latch and horns. (cant remember what its called *duh). You can then remove the cam and install the new one. ITS CLOSE!. But i did it so im sure you can do it on a 69. By the way mine is a BBC.

On my 69, I pulled one motor mount bolt and jacked the engine up a little, that moved it over enough to clear the grille panel.
