I added Vortec heads, an RPM Airgap manifold and a Holley carb to my 68 327. The engine was orginial w/49K miles. After the intial local shakedown cruises I drove from AL to LA to store the car. During the 500mi trip the engine took 2 quarts of oil and blew smoke during decelleration loads. Any body have any ideas? The engine was tight to begin with.

Probably valve seals. Not a major operation to fix. Considering that it has different heads and it smokes during decelleration, I'd bet that's all it is. Do you get a puff of smoke at start-up too?

Mine did the same thing after a cam change. We found that the spring retainers had been slamming into the seals until they were shredded. In my case we were able to replace the retainers with a set that had a little less meat on the bottom side.

My 327 has the stock cam. I am not sure what the lift is, but Vortec heads are rated at .475" on the GM performance parts website. I do get a small puff of smoke at start when it is cold I think. I haven't seen the car since last May as I am currently stationed in Korea.
