: Another starter problem

Recently I installed a rebuilt starter motor from NAPA reusing my old solenoid. The initial problem was an occasional grinding which I though was a shimming problem. When I started to work on the starter I realized that the case was broken at the mounting points. With both of these problems I figured it was best to replace the starter. Immediately I noticed that the rebuilt starter was much louder than the old starter which I can live with. The problem I’m having is once the car warms up the starter doesn’t like to crank over. It labors quit a bit. Sometimes I wonder if it’s going to start the engine. I thought this type of problem was related to the solenoid. Keep in mind that this is the same solenoid that was on the old starter.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Bubba

you could replace the solenoid but the problem your discribing is a heat soak condition, I bet you do not have the heat shield installed on the starter, the heat from the exhaust manifold is to hot and to close to the starter motor. you can buy these from ground up or others also carry them. it is very difficult to install with the starter which is why nobody wanted to put them back on once they got the starter off but it is there for a reason it was there

Thanks for the replies. I agree with both suggestions. My confusion is this didn’t happen with the old starter. Keep in mind that I’m using the same solenoid. I drove this car everyday last summer and it never acted this way. Now with a new rebuilt starter in the winter it acts up. My gut feeling tells me it’s a starter motor problem, not the solenoid or heat. If I’m wrong would installing a remote solenoid be the quick fix?

Thanks again,
Bubba

Typically, if the starter engages at all I usually consider it to be a starter or main wiring problem. It is possible that the solenoids switch contact inside is bad. Basically, either a connection is bad or the starter motor is bad.

If this isn't the case, you could also have too much initial timing or too high compression for the starter.

Disable the ignition. Cranking it for about 5 seconds and then check immediately for warm electrical connections. The warm ones are the bad ones.
