: Sputtering
danlg65 Jan 3rd, 03, 6:07 PM My 72 chevelle was running fine earlier, but for some reason it suddenly wouldnt start. After I let it sit it finally started, but as I pushed the accellerated it began to sputter and would not increase its speed, it then died and did the same thing after I started it again with trouble. I do not know why the car has suddenly started running like this, since a few hours before it was running as well as ever.
Sid Coleman Jan 3rd, 03, 7:04 PM Gotta start with the basics. Gotta have fuel, air and spark, at the right time. Got fuel? Sounds like fuel starvation, esp. when you push the accel. and nothing happens. You may have a clogged filter or weak pump. If you're running a holley, pull the sight plug & verify fuel in there.
Other item it could be is a jumped timing chain. If you have a timing light, re-verify your timing settings.
Get back to us with that data & we'll help you figure it out http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif

danlg65 Jan 3rd, 03, 7:52 PM I think it may be possible that the car is stuck in choke. Are these symptoms consistant with that? And if so, how would i go about releasing the choke if it is stuck?
Sid Coleman Jan 3rd, 03, 10:30 PM 1st, verify your choke is on. Take off the air cleaner lid and look-is the metal flap closed? If so, that's the problem. Although if it hasn't been run for a while (engine cold), then in our temperatures, it SHOULD be closed a bit. If you open the throttle arm a bit-can you push the choke open a bit?
As to getting it unstuck-that'll depend on your level of technical skill-how confident are you working on this type thing?? I'm guessing here (let me know if I'm wrong) that you're fairly new to working on a car.
Unsticking a choke could be checking the linkage for freedom of movement, cleaning via carb cleaner spray. Verifying all vaccuum operated pulloffs, hoses and assoc. hardware.

danlg65 Jan 4th, 03, 11:55 PM I just turned 17 and this is my first car, so you are very right that I am new in working with cars. It was the stuck choke that was causing the problem and it was a very simple fix. Thanks for all of your help.
Sid Coleman Jan 5th, 03, 1:03 AM You're very welcome http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif
You've stumbled onto one of the best sites on the web. Feel free to ask-we were all beginners at one time. Also, I see you're fairly close. Hope to see you at the MCC show this summer in North East-you'll love it up here!
