I would assume this is the A/C box and that is part of the A/C where the compressor lines plug in. If that is the case you can remove the entire heater box that connects to the firewall, that might mean taking off the fender and inner fender to get to it, (not sure what year that is?). I know I have a 72 el camino and to get at some of the bolts holding on the heater box you have to remove the fender and inner fender.

it is a 74 malibu. yea its part where the lines plug in to. so i can remove the whole box? what would be behind it, just the firewall?

well behind it is the firewall yes, but the box is where the blower motor is plugged in and connects to all the inside ductwork, (atleast in a 72) so you would need to keep the box. Now you could look for a 74 malibu that had heat only and take the box off of that, but im pretty sure you need to have some sort of box. If you take a look at the box my dad fabricated over in this thread http://www.chevelles.com/forums/showthread.php?t=254514 my box started off like your, with a huge hump comming out to hold the a/c contents and now it looks like the one in that thread, so you have some options, but I think you need to run one if you want heat atleast.

that is a cool box you guys made. i will probably open that box and take out the contents and leave the box so it still looks factory. thanks.

good deal, that's how I had it before but I was sick of having that damn box come halfway passed my engine. Now the engine is a lot more visible on that side

unfortunately, I didn't have it like that long enough to find something to plug the holes. The good thing is I am sure you could get it all back together and plug them later on. As of right now I don't think it would make a big difference functionally if you plug them or not. If you search around I am sure there are some miscellaneous things in like home depot or something that would work.
