: anyone know about PS3's?

my brother's not even 1 year old 40gig PS3 died- well, the thing fires up and you can get to everything in the menu, but the drive doesn't work.
it's still in the warranty period, but he can't find his receipt and Target (where he bought it) has the receipt on file, but has a policy of not printing out duplicates. so he can't get it fixed under warranty.
anyone know if this is a common problem- it started out by first not playing cd's, then no dvd movies, then no blue ray movies, then finally it quit playing games. i'm thinking that either the blue ray drive is dead or has a bad connection, or it has a software issue. we tried reinstalling everything from the supplied disc and updating the software online, and it didn't fix anything.

Why would he need the receipt at target when its not a big deal for target anymore because it is passed the 90 days of the receipt? sony should have a 1 year warranty on it and I would think you need to contact them.

I have one...

I have read on the net that playing Blu-ray kills the laser. Something everyone didnt know when the blu-ray HDDVD fight was going on...we wont watch Blu-ray movies. We did it once or twice then that was it. We wont do it anymore...not saying that you watched a bunch of Blu-rays...

Sounds like the drive's laser died...

If you cant get it fixed, look for a replacement laser on ebay and put it in. They are not that hard...

Doesn't the PS3 use the Blu-Ray to play games as well? Assuming so, I can't imagine watching a Blu-Ray movie now and then would be anywhere nearly as much wear and tear on the drive as playing games would be.

Derrick, did he register it with Sony when he bought it? If so, they know if you are inside or outside the warranty period or not. Besides, they will probably be the best choice to have it fixed whether they or your brother is paying the bill.

he has contacted Sony, and they said he needs the receipt to get it fixed under warranty even tho he registered it when he bought it.

like i keep telling him- this is why all games should be in cartridge form... it's pretty hard to screw them up and they load instantly.

That really is a bummer. I don't wanna sound like the fanboy I am but I never had to prove with my reciept when I sent my xbox 360 in for repair :D
