Trying to help a friend with a 87 pick up.
Motor is the 22 rte , has head trouble and the turbo heads are not cast anymore. Looking for answers on changing over to a new non- turbo head.

Quick look turned up this:
"... the 22rte is the same as a 22re the only change other then the turbo stuff is the headgasket. It runs a spacer that Lowers compression ..."
My only Toyota experience was not great. Cressida became a lump when the engine let go due to an oiling problem. - No Thanks.

My parents had 5 Toyota's, not any more. They all had issues, timing chains, brakes, warped exhaust manifolds, blown head gaskets...

Might also try calling the parts counters at dealerships.
They usually know stuff like that, I suspect.

I show a listing for a remanufactured head for that engine. I cannot get a price until Thursday at the shop. If you are interested let me know and I will check.

If anybody else ever needs to know. It ends up not being a good idea. Turbo motor has less compression,larger injectors, and a whole different tune on the ecm. So unless the turbo itself is also bad. Its not worth the money to convert.
