I gave it a good cleaning with the pressure washer, simple green, and a scrub brush. The block looks good but I'm a little concerned with the deck. I don't think its been shaved but its rough. Tomorrow I will organize the garage and begin to prep the block for the hot tank. Lots of deburring to be done and I want to chamfer all the bolt holes before it gets tanked. The stand and hoist are good to go. I have to get the motor out of the car before the 27th as they cut my knee then and that will bench me for a little while.
Then its on, time to collect my parts from distant lands and get 'er dun:thumbsup:
Brettd85 Jan 6th, 09, 10:51 PM I'm kinda confused...
Is this the engine from your 69 or a different block? It doesnt appear to be decked to me unless those numbers are a restamp. Otherwise it looks pretty good.

That's the 454 block I got before I left WA.

From the pics my deck looked just as rough and it had been resurfaced at some point. Arent the bolt holes already chamfered? After tanking it clean it again with warm soap and water and coat the cylinder walls and lifter bores with light oil, wiping them down with a paper towel. I have heard to use paper towels rather than rags as the paper towel lint is oil soluble. Whats your timeline?
FRYNTYR Jan 6th, 09, 11:19 PM I can deck it for ya Mark!!!!!
kettbo Jan 6th, 09, 11:59 PM The block has been decked.
You can tell by the fly-cut (circular) pattern.
The factory decks are broached, should have parallel lines along the top of the deck, front to back
L633 is probably the job number on the rebuild
The other Build date with Suffix looks original but odd that the VIN derivative overlaps a tiny bit.....understandable when people get in a hurry. Seems the block only had a clean-up pass put on the deck.
1975 nor 1977 block, truck application
Gee, that engine was made when I was in High School!

Interesting info..

You see this all the time on Tag Team plus my years with the Vette Hobby. Some try to pass a decked block with swirls and a fresh re-stamp :noway:. A broach-cut would look like extra tiny file had been dragged across the length of the deck...perfectly straight and parallel to another. Some no-goodnicks use a belt sander to replicate the broaching to various degrees of success.
cobaltchev67 Jan 7th, 09, 4:33 AM So if the factory machining looks like parallel lines, what kind of machine are they using to do that? Just a straight line cutter, instead of a circular motion....doesn't seem to me that different machining equipment would make it to factories rather than machine shops.....unless it's a really big machine that would ONLY be at a factory.
Something else I thought of...
I worked with a guy from Michigan for awhile probably 5 years ago, he would tell me about 200 ton presses in the old Big 3 factories for stamping body panels, etc. that were left because they didn't want to dismantle them. I wonder just how much machining equipment is left in those old places. He said they had to put them together at the factory and they were too big to even put on a lowboy trailer. Also makes you think about if some of the original stamping dies are laying around there somewhere....

Hey Brett,
Remember, having no debris or lint is the best case scenario but most garage builds will get a little. I like to used the blue coscto paper towels for the wipe down. Diapers are just too expensive to use any more.. Unless you know someone who buys them out of necessity.. I don't want to mention any names but some of us on here are getting close to that diaper age again.. Strat life with diapers.... end life with diapers.. Hmmm
As far as a time line... There is NO timeline in my book.. If that block is prepped and cylindars wiped down with oil... you assemble it then.. The oil attracts dust like a hobo on a hotdog... no stopping it. Wipe it, assemble it, then wrap it or button it up... Just my humble input brotha':D

I keep telling people that you're just misunderstood but nobody's buying it

May be due to my crosseye and excessive drooling. :D But I see my therapist for it constantly! :hurray:
Fat Tire Jan 7th, 09, 3:07 PM Brett,
I figured that my child...especially since it was kind of an open question... But I don't get on here much.. and wanted to give a bud some input. Plus it was a chance to tease the older fellers about thier diapers....
besides.. wasn't it you that I told I used paper towels on assembly? uh oh.. I can't remember... alzhiemers:sad: Guess i better start stocking up on the Huggies:noway:
gotago Jan 7th, 09, 4:02 PM Well the real concern I have is if I have to get the block decked to clean it up, I'm going to have problems. I'm already pushing the envelope on compression and having the block decked will push me way over the edge for pump gas if I use my 215 heads. I'd get RRs if I had the money but this is a budget build and my cash is going into good machining and quality fastners and I'm counting on re-using all my parts from the 396. Oh well, between everybody here (even Dave:D) we'll figure it out.
Brettd85 Jan 7th, 09, 4:08 PM You could do what I did, thicker shim head gaskets...
Bryan59EC Jan 7th, 09, 9:17 PM So----you got a time frame of when you're gonna be needin' the hoist???
Take just a few minutes to get it in the ol truck

just run a thicker head gasket
66SSFan Jan 7th, 09, 9:43 PM Don't get too worried untill the deck height is checked, it will work out:thumbsup:
