I've got a vacumn leak where the master cylinder bolts up to the vacumn canister. Before I take it off, I was wondering what creates the seal. Is there a rubber gasket or O-ring on the back of the master cylinder? Do you think the vacumn canister is bad? The brakes are really hard to push, and I know that is a symptom of a bad canister. I put my hand under the master cylinder with the motor running, and can feel and hear the air. Thanks for any help

That would be a vacumn booster leaking

what causes the seal between the booster and the master cylinder? wouldn't the booster just suck air if there were no master cylinder bolted to it?

there are o-rings around the inside of the booster where the small rod pushes into the master cylinder. there shouldn't be any air leaking around the master cylinder connection.
If your brake pedal is hard it is usually a problem with the booster. given that you have a good vacuum source to begin with.

Ok, I did buy another vacumn booster at a swap meet. It looks in good condition, is there any way to test it before I go through all the trouble of installilng it?

There is no seal between the booster and the master cylinder. The sealing is all done internally in the booster.
If you were to connect your vacuum hose on the car to the booster you just bought and start the engine, it should tell you if there are any leaks.

Ok, so if I take the hose off the booster in the car and plug it in the one I bought, I should not hear any air?
