: Engine Stall?

I've been having problems recently... heres the deal. Its a 350 w/ a Holley 650... at idle it drops into really low rpm 400-600 and wants to stall out and eventually does.
Sometimes after stepping on going down the street it wants to stall out going 30 mph or so. Its an automatic and I've just put in new spark plugs, new spark plug wires, replace the header gaskets and it still keeps stalling out.
Also, the air/ fuel ratio is too rich... I think there is too much fuel getting into the engine because the exhaust burns your eyes like hell. Not sure what to do about any of this. Suggestions would be extremely helpful! Thanx a lot! ~MIKE

Make sure the powervalve is not blown out or you may have the wrong one in it. Sounds to me like you are getting a lot of raw gas that your motor does not want. How do the plugs look after you have driven it?? More imfo also would help us help you.

I've got nearly the same problem with my '71 stalls out at idle and when accelerating from a stop. Still haven't figured it out yet, but letting it warm up for about 20 min before driving helps. Let me know if you find the problem and I'll return the favor if I figure it out.

I thought the carb may be dirty, so I broke it down and replaced all the gaskets, needle, seat, etc.. Still does it. I think it's a little lean, or the gas isn't making it to cylinder. Either way, not getting enough gas. May be a vacuum problem.

It could be a bad power valve or something as simple as a saturated float. When you rebuild a carb, the float should always be replaced. I'd also suggest checking the float levels in the front and rear bowls.

I would agree with checking the float bowl levels. I just had a problem with my new 383. It wouldn't idle and wouldn't run under 20* BTDC. Checked the float bowls and I was starving the car of fuel. Fuel level was way down.

I agree, it's in the carb.
