Hey remember a post a while back,

Carb? Carb? Carb? http://www.chevelles.com/forum/Forum9/HTML/011273.html

I found I had the thick carb gasket backwards (front to back) and this caused a huge vac leak.

After I bolted it back on, I was able to get it started, but appears to have some popping/backfire in the exhaust.

Do I still have a vac leak? It's not idling fast enuff either. I think I need to bump the fast idle a 1/2 turn. I know there are only 2 screws, which one is it on a 79 Q-jet?

But it is running again! http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif

Fast idle screw is under the choke linkage on the right(passenger) side of the carb. The curb idle is on the left side. You should be able to get a cheap tach at pepboys, autozone, or even walmart. That will let you set the speeds more accurately, and can also be used to set idle mixtures.
About re-checking for the vacuum leak, spray brake parts cleaner or carb cleaner around the base of the carb, and monitor the engine speed. A change means the engine is sucking in the cleaner throught the base gasket.
