: Vinyl dye to change interior color, does it work well?
Meatball Jan 3rd, 09, 10:34 PM Has anyone used vinyl dye to touch up or recolor the parts of their interior? I would like to know how the dye covers, can it be done with one coat or is it a multi coat process? what brand and where to buy it also.
Thanks guys,
Don

yellow69rsz Jan 3rd, 09, 10:53 PM I've used it several times with very good luck, the trick is clean and prep thoroughly. I would 1st scrub with a cleaner like simple green and rinse and let dry, then lightly scotchbrite and clean all crevices with a prep-sol type cleaner. Good luck!
TCSS1970 Jan 4th, 09, 1:13 AM I done my med blue and it did fine. When doing the cleaning keep in mind most solvents to clean metal will melt plastic. If you have any doubts start on the back of kick panel to see if it melts it. If you don't get the amorall or any type of protectant like it, it won't do well.
works fine, really shocked me how good it is
There is also an adhesion promoter that you can spray on before the dye is applied. It keeps the dye from chipping off. Eastwood or any parts vendor would carry the stuff.
BlueSS454 Jan 4th, 09, 11:42 AM THis was dark green. I used SEM Vinyl Dye.

70IowaElco Jan 4th, 09, 1:53 PM I use PPG dye through the paint gun. As said above the prep is the most important part.
Rucumn Jan 4th, 09, 10:04 PM I have sprayed black over red and black over blue and it works well. I agree with above that you need to thoroughly clean the plastic/vinyl. I prefer to use PPG DX330 wax and grease remover and then soap and water. Make sure the soap does not have silicone in it. I think I have used "JOY" dish soap in the past. I then used SEM's "Vinyl Prep" - apply by rag. I use SEM dyes.
It's amazing how much in today's cars is actually dyed or painted!
Remember to use light coats, with the first coat concentrated on getting in seams and hard to reach or hard to cover places.
Also, I have had problems with areas that come into contact with other areas, especially on a hot day. (i.e. door panels which touch bottom of pillar covers, or sides of seats touching plastic armrests, etc...)
bigblockshock Jan 4th, 09, 10:28 PM used Marhyde brand red over over red works very well used the primer first.

Looks great! I want to do a Dark Saddle over Black, but only the seats, the rest I plan to buy new (door panels, package tray, carpet, dash) the seats look like they were reupholstered just before I bought hte car so I hate to buy new ones. thanks for the feedback. Ultimately I would like to paint the car dark blue so the combination should look sharp.
I was surprised how well it works too. Then again, I didn't expect much and I expected it to start peeling by now. It's been a year and it's starting to show hairline cracks of which the tan leather is starting to show thru but still hardly noticeable. It took me 2 wks to do prep work so i'm pretty sure I prepped as best as reasonably possible.
I don't think you'll regret doing it. Just keep a bottle handy for future touch ups.
p.s. I used an air gun for the flat areas and a brush for touchups. bought my dye at leatherique.com after much research. don't use the clearcoat!!!
p.s. 2. Don't mind "The Club". haha
